Why does the SBF scholarship journey start in Grade 6?

Because we believe scholars should enter high school prepared, not only academically, but personally and socially too.

In Grade 7, our scholars take part in a focused Prep Programme where we strengthen their maths and English, while introducing them to nine SBF Power Skills:

✓ Tenacity
✓ Goal-driven
✓ Critical thinking
✓ Analytical thinking
✓ Innovation
✓ Agility
✓ Collaborative relationships
✓ Financial literacy
✓ Communicating with impact

This early support helps our scholars build the confidence, mindset, and skills they need to navigate high school and everything that comes after.

We support our scholars from Grade 6 until their first job.

We are not only focused on where our scholars go. We are focused on who they become.

Academic access is an important part of the journey, but it is not the full measure of long-term impact. The real work is in preparing young people to navigate opportunity with purpose.

That means supporting scholars to develop the skills, values and mindset they need to thrive in changing environments, to think critically, communicate effectively, adapt with resilience, make considered decisions and contribute meaningfully to the spaces they enter.

It also means recognising that success is not only academic. It is personal, social and professional. It is shaped by a young person’s ability to understand themselves, build healthy relationships, remain grounded in their values and see their future as something they are capable of shaping.

This is the kind of young person SBF is committed to developing, not only a scholar with access to opportunity, but a future-ready individual who can use that opportunity to create lasting impact for themselves, their families, their communities and South Africa.

Already making his mark on the rugby field, Boitumelo continues to show what can be achieved through dedication and a willingness to learn. This year, he was selected for the Western Province Schools Rugby 2026 Under 18 Academy Week, a significant achievement and recognition of the hard work he has put into his development as a player. Congratulations on this well-deserved accomplishment.

“Rugby is something I’m very passionate about and have loved since I started playing when I joined Wynberg. It wasn’t always easy, especially in the beginning when I was playing in lower teams and many players were ahead of me.

The power skill that stands out most to me is Agility. Rugby has taught me the importance of being adaptable, coachable, and willing to learn. Being able to adjust to new challenges and take feedback on board is one of the biggest reasons I have been able to grow as a person.

My advice to students joining the programme would be to make full use of the opportunities and resources available to you. I would also encourage them to build strong relationships as those connections can provide support and motivation during challenging times.”

Charisma has earned her place in her school’s first team basketball team, where she is excelling well above her age group and performing at the level of senior players. She is also a great example of the values SBF’s prep programme hopes to instil. Futures and careers are no longer linear, and young people can have many interests, many talents, and many dreams. What matters is having the courage to take the opportunities in front of you, work hard, and follow the path that feels true to who you are.

“Out of all my extra-mural activities the one I enjoy is basketball because my teammates were extremely kind hearted and it was a small space where I feel safe.

My proudest moment was when I received my certificates at the prep graduation. God and my parents are the ones who keep pushing and motivating me.

The message I would give is ‘if you have an opportunity don't stare at it but go ahead and grab it because some of them only come once in a lifetime.’

SBF shaped me in such a way that I know that I'm working towards something and that I shouldn't give up or worry about my mistakes but learn from them as I am still in the learning space.

My dreams are to become a Cardiologist, make my family's life better and grow my faith in God as well. My steps to reach this are through prayer and focusing on working hard at school.”

Grade 9 is a big transition point, and subject choice is one of the first decisions that asks scholars to think more intentionally about who they are, what they enjoy, and where they may be heading.

Following the insight process that has already taken place, our upcoming Grade 9 Subject Choice Feedback Sessions will take place on 20 and 27 June. These sessions are designed to support scholars and parents as they reflect on the feedback received and consider how it connects to Grade 10 subject choices.

The sessions will create space for scholars to better understand their strengths and interests, explore how these may align with subject pathways, and feel more confident about the decisions ahead. Parents will also be guided on how to support this process in a way that is informed, constructive, and aligned with each scholar’s growth.

This is about encouraging reflection, reducing uncertainty, and helping families make decisions together with greater confidence and purpose.

We look forward to supporting our Grade 9 scholars and parents through this important step in their senior school journey.

DThe SASLI Insight Series kicked off with a bang!

Using AI effectively and safely: Enhancing your student experience with AI

In collaboration with Zaio Institute of Technology, we hosted an insightful session with our Laureates focused on shifting the conversation around AI from fear to opportunity. The session was facilitated by Zaio Founder, Akhil Boddu.

Rather than seeing AI as something that will take jobs away, the session encouraged Laureates to think about how they can stay agile, adapt, and work with AI to build successful, future-ready careers. A great practical example shared was Zaio, a company that has continued to hire more people in recent months, showing that AI can also create new opportunities when used effectively.

Our Laureates also gained practical tips, tools, and ideas they can start applying immediately, including how to build AI agents that can support everyday tasks such as job hunting, studying, and preparing for the world of work.

It was an informative and empowering session, and our Laureates walked away with practical knowledge they can use to become stronger students today and more prepared professionals tomorrow.

A few years ago, Luke Rossouw shared his dream of reimagining low-cost housing to be more functional, sustainable and impactful for the communities living in them. Today, he is living that dream.

“I am currently working at the City of Cape Town as an architect. My unit focuses on advising, assisting and guiding the public and professionals when doing Affordable Rental Flats on their own properties. My work differs from working on projects that will be of more assistance to the public, to attending outreaches for our unit, or even attending events from the Deputy Mayor or Mayor of Cape Town.

A defining moment in my experience that shaped how I see my work today is living in an area that had low-cost housing. Some buildings were not designed sustainably, and those problems surfaced in my home. This became a point to me that needed to be addressed. And how fitting it is to be working as an advisor for the municipality. Guiding people to sustainable and safe ways of building homes is exactly what I wanted to be doing at this point in my life.

SBF has always been there. Providing support when needed, coaching when needed and sometimes even financial advice. The values I learnt from SBF are applicable in my everyday life now and I am glad I learnt those values as it also helps me conduct myself professionally.

When things get tough, the SBF value that I carry with me always is to protect and look after my mental health. I do this by staying positive through the ups and downs of life and my work. I learnt this through the emotional wellness tips and tricks we learnt, and through the coaching that was availed to me through SBF.”
