Shonaquip Social Enterprise (SSE) is a South African hybrid social enterprise committed to driving disability-focused social change through innovative, locally rooted solutions. With over 30 years of experience, we work to dismantle the systemic barriers that prevent children with disabilities and their families from fully participating in society. Our work spans inclusive early childhood educatio

n, appropriate assistive technology, professional training, family empowerment, and policy partnerships—all grounded in the belief that inclusion isn’t charity, it’s justice. Every wheelchair we deliver, every family we train, every school we support, is part of a bigger picture: building a world designed to include everyone. Together with communities, governments, and cross-sector partners, we are rewriting the future of disability—one that centres dignity, equity, and opportunity for all. By 2030, we aim to meaningfully impact 350,000 lives across South Africa and beyond.

NOW OPEN: 2026 South Africa MedTech Innovation Challenge

R3 million in prize money. Six awards. Seven weeks to apply. Applications are now open.

If you have built a medical technology in South Africa — inside a company, a university laboratory, a science council team — this is where it stops being a project and starts being a solution the health system can see.

A national challenge led by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), implemented by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) through the The Innovation Bridge Portal, in partnership with Medical Device Manufacturers of South Africa, SALDA, The South African Medical Technology Industry Association (SAMED), WCMDC and UCT MedTech Labs.

WHO MAY APPLY
The Challenge is open exclusively to South African applicants:
• Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) registered and operating in South Africa
• University-based research teams and innovators affiliated with recognised South African higher education institutions
• Research teams and innovators affiliated with South African Science Councils
• Academic research laboratories based at South African institutions
• Applicants must be South African entities or formally affiliated with South African institutions.

• Applications open: 11 August 2026
• Applications close: 25 September 2026, 23:59 SAST

WHY THIS MATTERS
Incomplete or inconsistent applications may be excluded during eligibility screening before anyone reads what you built. Preparing early is not admin. It is the difference between being assessed and being screened out.
