Shonaquip Social Enterprise Breaking down barriers to create inclusion for children with disabilities & their families We don’t just provide services or products—we shift systems.

Shonaquip Social Enterprise (SSE) is a South African hybrid social enterprise committed to driving disability-focused social change through innovative, locally rooted solutions. With over 30 years of experience, we work to dismantle the systemic barriers that prevent children with disabilities and their families from fully participating in society. Our work spans inclusive early childhood educatio

n, appropriate assistive technology, professional training, family empowerment, and policy partnerships—all grounded in the belief that inclusion isn’t charity, it’s justice. Every wheelchair we deliver, every family we train, every school we support, is part of a bigger picture: building a world designed to include everyone. Together with communities, governments, and cross-sector partners, we are rewriting the future of disability—one that centres dignity, equity, and opportunity for all. By 2030, we aim to meaningfully impact 350,000 lives across South Africa and beyond.

Happy Youth Day, South Africa! 🇿🇦✨

Today is all about celebrating the energy, dreams, and leadership of our young people.

For so many brilliant young minds, the right mobility device is the key that unlocks the school gates, brings friends together in the courtyard, and ensures every student can actively participate in their education. 🎒♿

When we design classrooms and communities with youth of all abilities in mind, our whole society grows stronger. Let’s keep moving forward together!

💬 What does an inclusive future look like to you? Share your thoughts or give a shoutout to an inspiring young leader in the comments! And check out the link in our bio to see how we’re co-creating accessible spaces.

When Kurt sent us this beautiful note, it reminds us exactly why we do what we do. 💙. For 16 years, he depended on others for his mobility. But recently, our incredible team members visited Kurt at home to expertly adjust his wheelchair settings.

Seeing him regain the independence to wheel himself again is an absolutely incredible milestone! ✨

A massive shoutout to Robyn, Mary-Anne, and Zane for your exceptional knowledge, technical skills, and unwavering support. Your willingness to go the extra mile truly changes lives and, in Kurt’s words, “”renews faith in humanity.””

Thank you for sharing your journey with us, Kurt. Your independence is our greatest reward!

Partnerships like these make meaningful impact possible!

This initiative is made possible through the collaboration of the International Society of Wheelchair Professionals - ISWP, Vicair, Solutions Medical, Sibanye Rustenburg Mine Community Development Trust , and Shonaquip Social Enterprise.

Together, we are improving access to appropriate assistive technology and helping wheelchair users maintain their health, comfort, independence and quality of life.

This collaboration demonstrates what is possible when industry, social enterprise and community partners come together around a shared goal of inclusion.

A special thank you to Vicair for their generous donation, which will help ensure that more people in South Africa have access to the seating and positioning support they need.

Our founder, Shona McDonald, recently had the privilege of speaking at the Inclusive Africa Conference 2026, where leaders, innovators, investors, advocates and policymakers from across the continent came together to advance disability inclusion in Africa's future.

Shona moderated a panel discussion on the growing need for investment in African MedTech innovation, design and manufacturing, and the ecosystems needed to support sustainable growth and impact.

"One of the greatest barriers to inclusive education, employment, and economic participation across the continent remains the lack of access to appropriately designed products and the support services needed to achieve meaningful outcomes. Addressing these challenges requires greater collaboration, innovation, and investment in locally relevant solutions."

Conferences like Inclusive Africa play an important role in bringing together diverse voices, sharing knowledge and championing accessibility, universal design and digital inclusion.

Together, we can help create a future where people with disabilities are not only included but are actively shaping the solutions, systems and technologies that impact their lives.

"We are all different. We are all a little bit the same. But most importantly, we all belong." 🌍✨

To mark World Day for Assistive Technology (AT), we are celebrating Elijah's journey and shining a light on a global inequity. 2.5 billion people need AT, but only 10% in low-income countries can access it.
Assistive products give children the freedom to study, play, and enjoy the everyday moments that many take for granted.

An evening celebrating innovation, collaboration and impact ✨

We were delighted to attend the Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards at Cape Town City Hall, where leaders from industry, academia and the public sector came together to recognise the ideas and innovations making a difference across the province.

It was a fantastic reminder of what is possible when people come together with a shared vision for positive change. 💙
