AOC has introduced a bill that could temporarily stop the construction of new large AI data centres across the United States.

The proposal, called the Artificial Intelligence Data Center Moratorium Act, would pause new major AI facilities and large expansions until Congress passes national safeguards addressing their wider impact.

Supporters say the AI boom is moving faster than the rules meant to control it.

Data centres can consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, place pressure on local power grids and potentially raise utility costs for nearby residents. Communities have also raised concerns about noise, land use, pollution and companies receiving major tax incentives while creating relatively few permanent jobs.

The bill would require Congress to address issues including environmental damage, electricity prices, worker protections, privacy, public safety and the effect of AI development on surrounding communities before large-scale construction could resume.

It would not ban artificial intelligence or shut down existing data centres. It would mainly target new large AI facilities and major expansions.

Supporters argue that a temporary pause is needed before companies build infrastructure that communities may be stuck with for decades.

Critics warn that freezing construction could slow innovation, push investment overseas and weaken America’s position in the global AI race.

The bill has only been introduced and is not currently law.

But it raises a major question:

Should companies be allowed to build enormous AI data centres first and deal with the consequences later, or should the rules be in place before construction begins?
