Shoppers will find clean, quality items and attentive staff. Income from our shops is the lifeblood that supports our beneficiaries. Oasis aims to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Intellectually disabled people often face discrimination and barriers that restrict them from participating in society on an equal basis. They are often denied their rights to be included in th
e general school system, to be employed, to live independently in the community, to move freely, and to participate in sport and cultural activities. In 1952 a group of parents found a solution to the problem of their children being excluded from mainstream society when they started their own school – an oasis – for children with intellectual disability. Today, the Oasis Association is a model of integrated services. We are committed to assisting both children and adults with intellectual disabilities to live a dignified life, providing them with residential housing and for the over 18’s with access to work opportunities so that they can contribute to their communities and increase their sense of self-worth. We also provide holistic support in the form of transport, occupational therapy, life and work skills training and sport and recreation opportunities. Oasis provides over 370 intellectually disabled individuals with a safe and protective working environment where they can, receive a stipend and other benefits, earn new skills and gain a level of freedom. We also provide residential housing for over 450 men, women and children in the greater Cape Town area. We provide this care and support ourselves through a number of programmes and projects including our recycling initiatives, the bakery, the bric-a-brac stores and our coffee shops.
