Thirty years into our democracy, a retired Constitutional Court Justice reminded us of a sobering truth: rights do not self-execute.
A legal text, however progressive, cannot build classrooms, reverse inequality, or restore human dignity on its own.
It takes people. It takes intention. It takes showing up.
On Friday, 11 September, The Sozo Foundation hosted a historic gathering led by Cllr Mandy Marr, WARD 45, Ward Councillor of Ward 45.
Over 30 local organisations. More than 60 delegates. All under one roof for an asset-mapping journey.
Together, we chose to pivot our community's narrative. Not from a place of what we lack, but from what we already have. Not from a position of scarcity, but stepping into the assets, gifts, and collective strength we have received.
Thirteen years ago, True North and Malcolm Parker attempted something similar here. It did not end as hoped. Vrygrond was not ready. The wounds were still open.
Honouring their intention makes Friday all the more significant.
For over 15 years, Sozo has been rooted in the community development story of Vrygrond. We have learned that change is possible, but never a given. It demands time, intentionality, and sacrifice.
We have walked through seasons of deep pain and loss. We have also witnessed wounds healed, minds renewed, and hope spring forth.
It was fitting that the theme of this gathering turned the word "impossible" on its head:
"I'm Vrygrond. I'm Possible."
A gathering of this scale cannot happen in isolation. Deep gratitude to Development Action Group and Akhona Siswana, whose technical expertise and skilled facilitation brought this asset-mapping process to life. Their role went far beyond helping us host a successful day. They have committed to walking alongside our community from here.
Collaborative, co-designed work will always go deeper than going it alone.
Vrygrond Is Possible.
