From church ministry to government ministry, Martin Meyer’s journey has always had one thing at its heart: service.

Growing up as a young Afrikaner in a complex South African society shaped how he understands identity and belonging. Today, as KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, he speaks about being proud of who you are while celebrating what makes South Africa unique: its diversity.

And perhaps it’s fitting that someone known for his colourful ties has a colourful story to tell about a country made up of so many different threads.

That commitment to service also extends to the work of his department, which recently achieved its first-ever clean audit, a milestone Meyer has linked to stronger accountability and the hard work of departmental officials.

For Meyer, building cohesion does not mean becoming the same. It means building relationships across difference, finding common ground and recognising that there is space for all of us.

From the dusty streets of a township during apartheid to finding her voice in the world of rugby, Dawn Dunn’s journey is one worth hearing.

Rugby wasn’t always part of the plan. But one live game, the roar of the crowd and the energy of the sport sparked something that would eventually take her from writing letters to the Sharks and Springboks to stepping behind the microphone as a commentator and radio host.

Today, her journey goes beyond broadcasting. Dawn is also helping to create opportunities for young women in rural communities to find their own place in rugby.

We recently sat down with Dawn in Durban to talk about where it all began, the moments that shaped her journey and why rugby has become so much more than a game.

🗳️ LGE2026 | Safety in Cape Town is on the ballot

For many communities across the Cape Flats, safety is not an abstract political issue. It shapes everyday life.

As Cape Town heads towards the 2026 Local Government Elections, questions around gangsterism, policing, corruption and community safety are firmly part of the conversation. But creating safer communities requires more than election promises.

What role should local government play? Can greater local control of policing make a difference? How do we rebuild trust in the institutions responsible for keeping people safe? And are communities already doing this work getting the support they need?

A new article by William Sezoe explores the debate around safety in Cape Town and argues that meaningful solutions will require cooperation between government, law enforcement and communities.

Safety may be on the ballot, but the conversation goes far beyond policing.

Safety is shaping Cape Town’s election debate. From gangsterism and police corruption to community action, voters must decide who can restore trust and make neighbourhoods safer.

🗳️ South Africa’s youth are not apathetic. They are unconvinced.

Ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, the question is not simply how we get more young South Africans to vote. It is how our political parties and democratic institutions convince them that participating can actually make a difference.

The numbers tell an important story. Almost half of all new voter registrations for the 2026 elections have come from people under 29. Yet many young South Africans still feel unheard, underrepresented and sceptical that political promises will translate into meaningful change.

For young people, politics is not abstract. It is about jobs. Crime. Potholes. Electricity. Transport. Housing. Safe communities. And whether those elected to serve them can be held accountable.

As the article argues, young voters do not need another slogan telling them their vote matters. They need institutions that show them why it matters.

With the local elections approaching, perhaps the real challenge is not youth apathy at all. It is rebuilding trust and demonstrating that participation has consequences.
