Having just built and dropped kennel number 2300 for a young dog named Skollie – we thought it was a good time to thank our donors and kennel sponsors! To Supply 5, Silicone and Gobi-X (wood & pallets), Cedarbrook (pallets and waterproof fabric), Prize roofing (roof sheeting), Mr Bolt & Nut (fasteners), Petplus (pet food and meds), KitKat (cat food), RNF Engineering (roof paint), Robyn, Di and Merry (kennel cushions), Dario’s Café (sterie funds) and all the selfless individuals who donate funds, sponsor the kennels, share our posts for fostering and adopting needy dogs and cats, donate fencing, mats and just help us to do the job we do – THANK YOU!! All the contributions – small or large make a BIG difference to the life of each animal we help. We are preparing to build a large number of our ECO FRIENDLY (made from recycled materials) kennels – in time for Christmas and are low on roof sheeting. If you have contacts in the roofing business who can donate off-cuts or even know people re-roofing – we can use their old roof sheeting (happy to collect) – please share so we can keep housing pups who have never had a decent shelter. Contrary to some who believe that our wooden kennels get chopped up for firewood – they don’t. They are waterproofed with recycled engine oil, which make them unusable for firewood and all our kennels are numbered and monitored by the organisations they are donated to. We still see dogs sleeping in kennels, that we dropped 5 years ago.

How is this for a 2nd chance! From being dumped on the streets of Parow to riding sh***un in a sports car! Venus came to us for rehabilitation after being picked up off the streets, in Parow. It looked like she had been fending for herself for months after being used as a puppy mill. On the small size for an adult female Rottie, sagging teats, her body covered in mange, eye infections, a cauliflower ear and ear infections – a terrified, cowering, limping little skeleton. After a full vet check, X-rays and scans to check for damage and trauma – it was established that she had spine damage (probably from being hit across the back by a hard object) and possible arthritis in her hind leg due to a previous injury. With decent food, a bit of medical care and lots of love and attention – Venus has bravely blossomed into a loving, special girl – everyone who meets her cannot believe how sweet, stoic, gentle and forgiving this little girl is. Now an adored part of her new family (and she has a another Rottie for company) – Venus is aptly named as the goddess of beauty and love.
After fixing up and rehoming a number of Rotties – it is so encouraging to see how these unjustly feared, gentle companions and family protectors are being given another chance. Venus just has to sit in her sports car and her owner feels safe – not because she is going to tear the throat out of anyone who comes near the car – but because she looks scary (even though she is just a little teddy bear)!
Other Rotties needing homes are Butch (4 year old cuddle bug who just wants to sit on your lap – all 40+kgs of him) – at Pure Rescue Rehabilitation and Training NPC 2021/765964/08, Bell (classic looking 3 year old young lady) at Dead Animals Walking and Grizzly (a mature 6 year old family girl) at Animal Welfare Helderberg. These are just 3 of the many Rotties who will be your best companion, friend and soul mate. More rehomable Rotties are also at Friend of the Rottweiler rescue and re-home South Africa and they all deserve another go at being part of a family!

Below some of our recent ladies sterilised in Abbotsdale. Rather than wait for better weather (which is better for the animals recovering from surgery) and countless more litters, we going ahead with 5 spays a week. This enables the volunteers to more easily arrange the spays, do post-surgery follow up and monitor the recovery. It reduces post op complications, which is a given for some of these little bodies – going back to dirt, wet and in some cases neglect. We are trying to get kennels out to as many as possible, ASAP and prior to the next batch going in to be spayed. It seems winter hasn’t left us yet, but even in summer a kennel is a safe space for these dogs away from exposure to noise, intimidation & physical abuse. Please sponsor a kennel for just R300 and you can give each one a safe, dry place to recover.

Angel came to us 18 months ago after being found stuck in a cattle gate, pregnant and terrified. She had been chased by local hooligan kids, in the area where these vermin specialise in ‘riding’, abusing and tormenting the farm/rural ponies. The owner of the farm was prepared to shoot her to get her off his property, but thanks to a number of local heroes, she was pulled out - horrifically her legs were lacerated and ripped open. Luckily no permanent ligament or tendon damage and she was taken to Wellington hospital to be treated and bandaged. Shortly thereafter she came to us for rehabilitation and rest, until her foal was born. Rascal was born, just over a year ago and is a perfect little c**t, with no injuries as result of the abuse his mom suffered while carrying him (amazingly his legs have white patches in the same area that his mom suffered her leg injuries – almost in sympathy for the agony that she went through). Angel has come a long way from attacking us when touched, and flinching when offered a treat - the modus operandi out there is for those kids is to offer the horses treats and when the horses approach, they hit the horse across the head. She now allows herself to be groomed, takes treats, has her feet trimmed, accepts being blanketed and is much calmer with people around her. Her little moustache (a result of foraging on rocks and barren ground – looking for scarce food) is still present but Rascal shows no sign of one, having had ample food since he was born. The sad reality is that had Angel not been chased until she fell into the gate, been rescued and had the chance to have her baby in a safe, well fed and cared for environment – Rascal most likely would not have survived. Countless other horses are out there, in the rural areas, close to Cape Town and there is no help for them. They have fallen through the cracks as far as the Animal Protection Act goes and despite what most people believe – horses can’t live on what little grass there may be in the fields they are confined to. They need proper nutrition, feet trimmed, deworming and access to sufficient clean water. Colic from dehydration and bush racing are regular death sentences for these forgotten beautiful beasts.
