Earlier this year, Imkhitha "Joy Joy" Joya earned the right to compete in the South African Closed Championshipโan incredible achievement for a junior player. She performed admirably against some of the country's strongest players but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the South African Olympiad team due to inconsistency at key moments.
The months that followed brought further disappointment. Due to financial constraints, Joy Joy was unable to participate in several major events, including the South African Junior Closed Championship, where she would have defended the title she won the previous year with a round to spare, as well as the African Youth Championship, the World Youth Championship, and several other tournaments for which she had qualified.
Many would have been discouraged. ๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ chose a different path.
She turned every setback into motivation, dedicating herself to improving her game. She made a promise to herself that if another national championship was held in Cape Town, she would give everything she had to win it.
Today, that promise has become history.
๐ ๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ก๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐จ๐๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก๐ฆ to ๐๐บ๐ธ๐ต๐ถ๐๐ต๐ฎ "๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ๐" ๐๐ผ๐๐ฎ on becoming the ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐๐ต ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ข๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ผ๐ป and ๐๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐๐ป๐ถ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป! ๐
Even more remarkably, ๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ has become the ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐๐ต ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ข๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ถ๐ป ๐ต๐ถ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐.
What makes this achievement even more special is that she chose to compete in the Ladies Section instead of the Under-15 Girls Section, where she could have pursued qualification for the World Schools Championship. Instead, she challenged herself against stronger oppositionโand emerged as a national champion. She now hopes to qualify for international events through the upcoming Summer Games in Limpopo.
๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ๐'๐ journey is a powerful reminder that ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ, ๐ต๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ, ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐, ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป are rewarded in the long run. Every disappointment became fuel for improvement, and today she stands as living proof that perseverance can turn setbacks into history.
