Isibindi Isibindi is a non-profit company that provides places and spaces where youth can feel part of a commu Jy is altyd welkom om by ons te kom kuier.

(English below)

Isibindi is an NPC that was known as ECHO Cape town between 2013-2020 and was part of the Echo youth development family that originally originated in Pretoria - In 2020 we established an NPC that specifically focuses on the projects in the Cape town. Since 2001, Echo has provided communes where young people in need (from orphanages, rehabilitation centers, the street, etc.) can move into a house with young working adults and thus become part of a supportive community. The South Africa's Children's Act only provides shelter for children under 18 - after that they have to take care of themselves - and therefore the need for such homes is immense. Isibindi consists of 4 houses for young people in need (2 in Tableview, 1 in Ysterplaat and 1 in Stellenbosch), and also an aftercare center in Ysterplaat that has been operating since May 2018. There are 5 to 8 young people in need between the ages of 18 and 25 in the homes and the aftercare consists of 20 vulnerable children between the ages of 10 and 18. We try to cultivate a type of ‘intentional community’ lifestyle in the communes. This just means that we let people stay together who would normally never end up in a house together. When they do stay together, they realize they can actually learn quite a lot from each other. The communes usually consist of two groups of people who become part of the community with two (initially divergent) motives:
1) The one group comes knocking because they have no support base and seek help.
2) The others because they are excited about this alternative way of life and the opportunity to make a contribution. Time and time again we see that those in need, who initially only wanted help, realize that they can help others as well and that those who thought they were just coming to help realize that they actually have a lot to learn. You are always welcome to come and give us a visit. Our vision: Isibindi aims to create places and spaces where youth from difficult or disadvantaged backgrounds can feel a part of a community and from this courageously find their purpose and passion. We strive to be a family with ISIBINDI.

Partnership🤝

We are grateful for our partnership with who help ensure that every young person living in our Isibindi homes has access to a mentor. Through Mamelani’s mentoring and transitional support programmes, our residents are connected to trusted adults who walk alongside them, offering guidance, encouragement, and support as they navigate life’s challenges and opportunities.

Together, we are building resilience, strengthening support networks, and helping young people thrive.

We believe working together just makes us stronger in making a difference in the lives of the young people we support 🌿

THROW BACK THURSDAY✨ (see facebook memory in the post)

Today marks 8 years since the start of our aftercare journey in Ysterplaat.

Over the years, we have laughed and cried and celebrated alongside so many amazing kids. Every child who has entered the doors has left a mark on our hearts.

Some are still with us. Some we still keep in touch with. Some have grown up and moved on to new chapters. But every single story matters, and every journey remains part of who we are.

& was here to help prepare food, as they were living in the Echo house in Ysterplaat back then.

What a cool memory🙌🏽

The past few weeks have reminded us that working with young people is not always easy, and it is definitely not always smooth sailing🌊

Between the challenges we faced and last week’s storm in Cape Town, we were reminded of the text in Matthew 14, where Peter step out onto the stormy waters, choosing courage even in the midst of the storm.

At Isibindi, there are difficult days, hard conversations, and unexpected storms, but there is also volunteers and donors and a team that keeps showing up with love and hope for every young person we serve, and so we continue..❤️

Mother Teresa said the problem with the world is that we draw the circle of family too small.

At Isibindi, try to make the circle bigger😊
We stretch it.
We make room.
We pull up more chairs.

For the child who needs a safe place after school.
For the one with nowhere to go.
For the neighbour, the stranger, the one who believes there is no way out.

Because family isn’t just about who belongs to us. It is about who we choose to include🌿
