SAFE FOR RECREATIONAL USE… IS THAT REALLY ENOUGH?

We constantly hear reports about marine life under pressure, aggressive seals and rabies concerns, stranded sea mammals and turtles, African penguins facing extinction, beached pufferfish and recurring red tides. Clearly something is not well.
Yet we are repeatedly reassured that the water is “safe for recreational use”. Is that now the benchmark for success?
Our effluent contains hormones, antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, alcohol and countless other substances that marine ecosystems were never designed to absorb. Scientists and environmental groups have repeatedly raised concerns about contaminants entering the ocean through marine outfalls.
We should not be dumping this into the sea and pretending the problem disappears beneath the surface.
Nature always sends the bill back. And when it comes, we are going to pay for this… big time.
