LEAP Science and Maths School

LEAP Science and Maths School LEAP is a leading learning organisation which gives young South Africans the academic and life skill The LEAP model works.

The LEAP learning community includes:
- Six independent high schools offering an excellent education to disadvantaged young people
- The LEAP Future Leaders teacher training programme
- A learning centre providing tutoring to students from our partner township schools
- A community support and development programme
- An active past students’ association – LEAPSA
- Collaborations and partnership

s that contribute to education development globally

As part of a global community, LEAP shares widely to build a social movement that will transform education and learning for all. While more and more children go to school in South Africa today, the qualifications they come out with mean less and less – particularly in science and maths. The majority of our young people have few opportunities, limited prospects and low expectations. LEAP Science and Maths Schools expect excellence – particularly in mathematics, science and English – and so guide young people towards a successful future. LEAP schools:
- Provide low fee education to students with potential from high-need township communities.
- Insist that all students study mathematics, physical science and English.
- Have an extended school day (8:00am to 4:15pm) and also provide Saturday classes and holiday programmes.
- Encourage self-awareness, confidence and personal development.
- Engage students in community work and activities that affirm cultural identity.
- Have smaller classes and schools to support accountability and help build relationships. These schools take in young people facing the most serious academic and social challenges, but have managed to achieve a 94% Grade 12 pass rate with 75% of graduates pursuing tertiary studies. The combination of personal empowerment and academic excellence is the key that unlocks real change. LEAP currently has six independent high schools:

Western Cape: LEAP 1, established in 2004, serves the community of Langa. LEAP 2, set-up in 2007, serves the communities of Gugulethu and Crossroads. Gauteng: LEAP 3, established in 2008, serves the community of Alexandra. LEAP 4, initiated in 2011, serves the community of Diepsloot. LEAP 6 serves the community of Ga-Rankuwa and was started in 2012. Limpopo: LEAP 5 is based in the semi-rural community of Jane Furse and was established in 2012.

Cape Town AWS Career Day💙

On Friday, 15 May, students from LEAP 1 (Langa), LEAP 2 (Philippi Crossroads), and LEAP 7 (Paarl Mbelweni) walked through the doors of the Amazon Web Services AWS Cape Town office, and walked out transformed. 🌟

Career Day 2026 was everything we hoped it would be and more.

The AWS team put tremendous effort into planning a truly interactive and engaging day, and it showed in every moment. Our students were welcomed warmly before diving into a day filled with real-world career exploration:

✅ Multiple career paths explored, students got to engage directly with AWS staff to ask the questions that mattered most to them
✅ One-on-one career coaching & speed career guidance
✅ An exclusive office tour at AWS Cape Town
✅ Hackathon insights & the AWS SD Bursary presentation
✅ Group problem-solving challenges on real-world issues, accessibility, education, environment, health & wellness, community, and entertainment & technology

But the moment that stopped us in our tracks? Hearing from one of our very own LEAP Alumni. 🧡

She stood in front of our current students and shared her journey, from being a LEAP student, to earning an AWS bursary, to building a thriving career in tech. She didn't just inspire our students. She showed them what's possible when opportunity meets hard work.

To the incredible AWS Cape Town team, thank you. Thank you for the hours of planning, the energy you poured into making this day interactive and meaningful, and for treating our students like they truly belong in your world. Because they do.

This is why partnerships matter. This is why we do what we do.

The future is bright. And our students are ready. 🚀

Innovation, creativity, and future-focused learning all in one space 🚀💻

The LEAP Institute FutureTech Career Expo brings together young minds passionate about technology, digital innovation, and problem-solving. Through coding showcases, interactive activities, engaging discussions with industry professionals, and hands-on experiences, students explore the endless possibilities within the world of tech.

A special highlight of the day is seeing students from our coding clubs confidently present projects developed using platforms such as Scratch, Python, and other creative technologies, showcasing not only technical skills but critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation.

Experiences like these continue to highlight the importance of creating spaces where young people can imagine, build, and shape the future through technology.
