Our mission is to provide a matching blood stem cell donor for every blood cancer patient in need. At DKMS Africa, we are driven by a single, life-saving mission: to provide hope and a second chance at life for patients diagnosed with blood cancer and other blood disorders. As part of the global DKMS family, we connect patients in need with matching stem cell donors, helping to build a world where

everyone has an equal chance to survive. Formerly known as the Sunflower Fund, DKMS Africa has been at the forefront of raising awareness, recruiting potential donors, and supporting life-saving transplants since 2020. With our roots in South Africa and our sights set on creating impact across the continent, we are committed to overcoming the disparities in donor availability for underrepresented populations. Our approach is community-driven and inclusive, empowering individuals, schools, universities, and corporate partners to get involved in our mission. Whether it's registering as a donor, organizing a donor drive, or contributing funds and services to sustain our efforts, every action taken brings us closer to saving lives. Join us in the fight against blood cancer and disorders. Together, we can make a difference; one swab, one match, one life at a time. Become a donor: https://www.dkms-africa.org/register-fb

Four years after being diagnosed with aplastic anaemia, brave little Sbahle is still fighting with courage and determination. Recently, she celebrated her 6th birthday, continues attending school, and her health is currently stable. 💛

While episodes of bleeding have thankfully subsided, she still requires monthly monitoring and treatment.,Despite her resilience and the progress she has made, one thing remains unchanged: Sbahle is still waiting for a matching stem cell donor. 🩸

As her mother shares: "Sbahle is such a brave little girl. She still goes to school, she still smiles, and she still dreams like any other six-year-old. Watching her stay strong gives us strength, but we continue to pray every day that a matching stem cell donor will be found." ✨

❤️ You could be the match that gives Sbahle a second chance at life.

Many people think blood donation and stem cell donation are the same thing.

They’re not.

🩸 Blood donation saves lives every single day by helping patients in emergencies, surgery, childbirth and ongoing treatment.

🧬 Stem cell donation gives patients with blood cancer and blood disorders a chance at a second life when they need a matching donor.

On World Blood Donor Day, we recognise the power of blood donors and the impact they make. 🩸

The good news? You can do both. 🥰

Join the fight against blood cancer and help grow the stem cell donor registry.

On Sunday, crossed the finish line at the IRONMAN 70.3 Durban, carrying the memory of her late father, Josh, with her throughout every stage of the race. ❤️

Every stroke, pedal, and stride was driven by purpose, resilience, and love. Her journey was about more than completing an IRONMAN 70.3. It was about honouring Josh’s legacy, raising awareness about stem cell donation, and helping give more patients a second chance at life. ✨

Thank you, Kelly, for turning remembrance into action and inspiring others through your determination and commitment to a cause so close to your heart. 💕

You can support Kelly’s mission and help spread awareness by joining her virtual donor registration drive:

Dr Jasmine Ramiah, Clinical Haematology Fellow, and Dr Mario Rankin, Orthopaedic Surgeon, represented DKMS Africa at HYROX Johannesburg 2026 - racing not just for performance, but for purpose. 🏁🩸

Their message is simple: awareness creates donors, and donors create cures. Behind every rep, run, and obstacle is the same reality faced by patients with blood cancer and blood disorders - resilience, uncertainty, and daily courage. 💪✨

As first-time HYROX athletes, they stepped into the challenge with nerves and determination, embodying what stem cell donation truly represents: trusting the process, showing up, and choosing hope. ❤️‍🔥
“This is what our patients feel; mental toughness, persistence, resilience, every day showing up.”

You don’t need to be an elite athlete to make a difference. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Through this challenge, they stood in solidarity with every patient waiting for a lifesaving stem cell donor. 🩸🤝

💛 ZELNAY NEEDS YOUR HELP: PLEASE SHARE 💛

Zelnay is a bright, bubbly young girl whose smile lights up every room. But her world changed when she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer.

After months of intensive treatment, her family received devastating news — the cancer had relapsed. Now, Zelnay's best chance at survival is finding a matching stem cell donor.

"My baby dreams of becoming a doctor one day. Please register as a stem cell donor to help Zelnay get the opportunity to continue chasing those dreams." – Zanelle, Zelnay's mother

At just 20 years old, Josh’s life changed in three days when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), a form of blood cancer. What followed was chemotherapy, isolation, and a long fight for survival. He is alive today because he endured a difficult fight for his life, and because a stranger chose to register as a stem cell donor.

On Cancer Survivors Day, we honour stories like Josh’s, stories of resilience, treatment, and second chances.

“I was sitting on a boat drinking beers in the sun when the doctor called and said I needed to come back in for more tests. My life changed from that moment on and has never been the same,” Josh recalls.

This Youth Month, his story is a reminder to young people that even if you are not eligible yet, you still have power.

💙 Learn about stem cell donation

💙 Share Josh’s story

💙 Encourage others to register

💙 Be ready to sign up when you turn 18

Young people are more likely to be someone’s lifesaving match. One day, that decision could be yours.

Ever wondered how likely it is to be called as a stem cell donor?

The reality is that it’s rare; only about 1% of registered donors are ever matched and called to donate within the first 10 years.

The reason lies in complexity: matching depends on HLA (human leukocyte antigen) tissue types. There are millions of possible combinations, which differ widely across individuals and populations, including across ethnic backgrounds.

So if you’ve registered and haven’t been contacted, that’s completely normal, it simply means your specific match hasn’t been needed yet. Your registration still makes a real difference. ✨

In South Africa, around 1 in 10 blood cancer patients cannot find a matching donor. Every new registration increases the chance that someone, somewhere, will find their lifesaving match.

You could be someone’s second chance at life. ❤️
