As a kid growing up in Joburg my experience of the movies was limited to going to the Drive In and watching at Aunty Lorraine and Stefan (RIP)in Alberton on 8mm. A drive in is an outdoor cinema where cars park on little hillocks facing the screen almost in awe of the screen as if bowing down to the screen so as to be able to look up at the screen. Sound would be broadcast via a local transmitter through each car stereo. Cost was R5 a show and if there was a double bill you could stay for both. Age restricted films didnt stop my mom and dad from bringing me and my brother. We would crouch down in the back on the floor covered by a duvet. 45 years have passed and now I show movies at the local tidal pool, sea themes mostly
