Dear Ward 5 residents

There is a problem with the Ward 5 WhatsApp line (0814417741).
You will unfortunately not be able to reach the Ward 5 office at the moment.

Please call the city call centre on *0860 103 089* with any service delivery issues you may have. Please call the emergency line on *021 480 7700* for any emergencies.

We are working to fix the problem as quickly as we can.

I am also not available for calls as I am in a SALGA Energy Workshop for the whole day.

Thank you in advance for your patience. 🙏

🔐 THINK LIKE A CRIMINAL: HOME SECURITY IN BOTHASIG SAPS PRECINCT - BY JAN BOTHA, CPF VICE-CHAIRPERSON

Security starts with mindset.

In Bothasig, Edgemead and Richwood, we are fortunate to live in strong communities — but opportunistic crime remains a reality. The best defence is proactive thinking.

If you were looking at your own home from the outside… where would you try to get in?

🏡 START AT YOUR BOUNDARY

Walk your property as if you were assessing it for entry.

• Are tree branches hanging over your wall?
• Are there low walls that make wall-jumping easier?
• Does thick vegetation provide cover near windows or doors?

That beautiful bougainvillea may look great — but it can also provide concealment.

Criminals look for quick wins. Remove them.

💡 LIGHTING IS A DETERRENT

Darkness creates opportunity.

Assess your property at night and look for shadows around:
• Gates
• Side passages
• Rear entrances
• Driveways

Install motion-sensor lights and consider solar backup lighting during power outages.

Visibility reduces risk.

🚪 STRENGTHEN PHYSICAL BARRIERS

Your gate and doors must withstand force.

• Invest in strong gates rather than cheaper alternatives.
• Ensure locks, hinges and frames are secure.
• Address low boundary vulnerabilities where necessary.

Barriers buy time — and time discourages criminals.

📟 TEST YOUR ALARM SYSTEM

Technology only works if it works properly.

• Test panic buttons regularly.
• Check response times.
• Service backup batteries at least twice a year.
• Start small and expand coverage with PIRs or beams as budget allows.

Layered security is more effective than relying on one measure alone.

🤝 COMMUNITY MATTERS

The precinct benefits from active community safety structures and security companies that partner with Bothasig SAPS.

But real security starts at home.

When residents take responsibility for their own risk assessments, the entire precinct becomes harder to target.

🧠 SECURITY IS A MINDSET

It is not a once-off installation.
It is continuous awareness.

Tonight, walk your property.
Look at it differently.
Fix one vulnerability.

Prevention is always cheaper than recovery.

⛈️ **STORM UPDATE: ZONE 4 PATROLS** ⛈️
Our dedicated patrollers have been out this evening, monitoring road conditions and clearing debris to keep our streets as safe as possible.

What a fantastic turnout for our 2026 AGM! We are thrilled to share some updates and highlights from the night:
• New Leadership: A huge congratulations to Prishen Naidoo on being elected as our new Vice Chairman.
• A Sincere Farewell: We want to extend a massive thank you to our exiting Vice Chairman, Jehan le Roux, for his years of dedicated service and contributions to our community's safety.
• Community Strength: Our deepest gratitude goes out to SAPS, CPF, the neighboring Edgemead and Bothasig Neighbourhood Watches, our security partners (ECP, Precinct, ADT, Swart Security), and every Ward 5 resident who attended. Your partnership is what makes Zone 4 strong!
⚠️ Secretary Needed
The position of Secretary is currently vacant following the resignation of Anastassia Sousa. We are looking for a dedicated member of the community to step up and join the Executive Committee.

Good afternoon residents.

I would like to update you that at today’s Subcouncil 7 meeting, I formally raised concerns on behalf of our community under Item 11: *Report on the Activities of Urban Waste Management*.

I requested more detailed reporting on C3s raised, fines issued, and compliance notices served relating to Illegal Dumping.

I also highlighted the ongoing challenges related to the *bakkie brigade and trolley related activity affecting Ward 1 and Ward 5*.

While the Enforcement Department has had some success in apprehending perpetrators, it is clear that the issue remains persistent.

I have therefore specifically requested a dedicated report to Subcouncil on enforcement actions relating to the bakkie brigade and trolley activity in our wards.

Please be assured that your concerns are taken seriously, and I will continue to raise and follow up on these matters through the appropriate Subcouncil channels, which remains my key responsibility.
