Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition - SRJC An organisation engaged in advocacy, research, service delivery, education, policy analysis and activism work in s*xual and reproductive health and rights

Working from an ethics of justice and an ethics of care, the SRJC is a coalition of organisations and individuals engaged in advocacy, research, service delivery, education, policy analysis and activism work in the fields of gender, s*xual and reproductive justice, health, rights and care. We underscore the commitment of government to justice principles, in particular that reproductive justice is

achieved “when all people have the social, political and economic power and resources to make healthy decisions about their gender, bodies and s*xualities”, as noted in the Fifteen Year Progress Review of the Implementation of the Population Policy for South Africa (1998) and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) (p. 68)1

Building on this, we understand s*xual and reproductive justice as:

Locating s*xualities and reproduction intersectionally within social, economic, cultural, gendered, geographical, political, racialized, age-based, and ability-based and other power relations;

Overcoming inequalities and oppressions, including silencing, stigma, judgement, and other barriers to accessing information, resources and services;

Affirming diversity of identities;

Recognizing different vulnerabilities and abilities;

Addressing violations, particularly gender based coercion and violence that occur in a number of settings;

Advocating comprehensive care, including mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health;

Acknowledging and overcoming cross-cutting pervasive social challenges such as transport, safety, water, sanitation, violence, crime, alcohol, drugs, migration, labour exploitation; and

Affirming s*x positive, s*xualities positive and positive reproductive decision-making approaches. We encourage critical and constructive debate and dialogue about issues relating to s*xual and reproductive justice, health and care. We are committed to diversity across a range of groups in our governance structures. We encourage inclusivity of voice within the framework of the values of the coalition. We envisage a vibrant and passionate group of activists forwarding s*xual and reproductive justice, health and care.

For women & girls with disabilities, the risk of violence is doubled, and support systems are halved. This , we underscore the urgent, intersectional truth: disability justice IS gender justice. Ending violence means removing ALL barriers - physical, attitudinal, systemic.

Our Coordinator and Programmes Officer, recently had the opportunity to connect with Refiloe Harris, Chairperson of the Safe Abortion Alliance of Southern Africa (SAASA), during a visit to Lesotho.

Refiloe, who also work with SheHive, is deeply engaged in GBV prevention, advancing access to safe abortion and feminist community work. The exchange offered an encouraging glimpse into the strength of regional organising and the shared priorities across our movements.

As SRJC, we are excited about deepening our connections in Lesotho and expanding feminist action across Southern Africa.

Today, we honour the strength, dignity and resilience of people living with HIV - especially women, girls, adolescents, LGBTQIA+ communities, s*x workers, migrants and persons with disabilities who continue to face stigma, discrimination and gender-based violence.

HIV justice is inseparable from gender justice. Ending GBV, addressing harmful systems, and expanding access to comprehensive SRHR are essential to ensuring that no one is left behind.

SRJC stands in solidarity with all those living with HIV, all those lost to AIDS-related illnesses, and all those working every day to challenge stigma, expand care, and build a world rooted in justice and equality.

Today and every day - we see you, we honour you, and we fight alongside you.

Today marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence under the global UNITE theme. In South Africa, GBVF remains a daily lived experience for far too many - a sad reminder that our work cannot be confined to a 16-day period. As SRJC, we enter these 16 days by naming what survivors have always known:
GBVF is sustained by the very systems meant to protect us; harmful laws and policies, policing failures, stigma in health settings, lack of access to SRHR, and the ongoing violence faced by s*x workers, LGBTQIA+ people, adolescents, migrants, and persons with disabilities.

With GBVF rates remaining unacceptably high across Africa, advocacy remains one of the most powerful tools for systemic change.

If we are to truly UNiTE, our fight must go beyond awareness.
We must confront the institutions that enable violence, challenge the policies that criminalise and exclude, and build feminist, community-led solutions that centre those most impacted.

The work doesn’t end on Day 16. It never has.
SRJC remains committed to pushing for justice every single day - through advocacy, policy influence, and collective feminist movement-building.

✨ Yesterday, SRJC, ISLA, SANAC and our partners gathered for a powerful national information session on CEVAWG.

We reflected on what this new AU Convention means for South Africa’s fight to end violence against women and girls - across law, health, SRHR, HIV, s*x workers and disability rights, and also the lived experiences of marginalised communities.

Together, we continue building the momentum needed to move CEVAWG from paper to practice; toward a future where every woman and girl lives free from violence.

And because feminist spaces are strengthened by those who show up consistently!

Thank you to all partners, speakers, and participants who joined us.

Call to Action is a member of the campaign. We associate ourselves and wish to amplify the call to end gender-based violence during the G20 summit, as led by the . 💜

As a movement dedicated to monitoring the implementation of and pillar 1, leadership, accountability and coordination, we do not support the call for full implementation of the National Council GBVF legislation. The call is inconsistent with our ongoing advocacy to get parliament to revise the legislation. We do not want a council that is weak and repeats the challenges that face our national gender machinery.

We do not want a council that is deficient by design. We don't want gimmicks, we want solutions. We don't want to claim easy victories. We are prepared for a long and hard fight with the government. What is at stake is the state's failure to establish a legislative and institutional framework that enables a sound and comprehensive response.

We know what works to end GBVF; we have agreed to it. The government must demonstrate the political will to do it.

It’s time to - and advance action on AUCEVAWG.

As South Africa deepens its response to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), we are reminded that justice must be inclusive; reaching those most often left behind.

The S*xual & Reproductive Justice Coalition (SRJC), in partnership with ISLA and SANAC Women’s Sector, will convene a National Information Session on the African Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women (CEVAWG).

This dialogue will explore how CEVAWG can strengthen the intersection between health, law, and human rights, addressing violence in the lives of women, adolescents, s*x workers, persons with disabilities, and people living with HIV.

Because advancing justice means seeing - and serving - every woman and girl in her full context.
