Streetscape's Community Projects

Streetscape's Community Projects STREETSCAPES creates work opportunities for people on the streets - a hand up, not a handout. Work means income, dignity and change to be part of society.

STREETSCAPES demonstrates that street based people are highly motivated to work and rebuild their lives. After 6 months in the program, we have achieved an average of 70% success rate of people moving off the streets. 68% address their substance misuse positively. We run organic gardens, bakery, garden service and street cleaning. We are setting up recycling transfer station in town.

Today our peers β€” Cyprian Manqola, Jonathan Manuel, Rudie Basson and Staysher Julies β€” together with play facilitator Mike Van Graan were invited to speak on with presenter Lester Kiewit to talk about our play, Humans of the Streets πŸ’›

They shared the heart behind the production, rooted in lived experience, and what it means to tell these stories with courage, honesty, and truth ✨ They also spoke as advocates for others still living on the streets, reflecting on how they themselves β€” and many others β€” are often treated like β€œmonsters” simply because of their circumstances 🌿

We are incredibly proud of them for showing up with courage, dignity, and purpose, and for using their voices to challenge these perceptions and share their truth. πŸ’›

Thank you to Cape Talk and to presenter Lester Kiewit for having us and giving us the space to share our story πŸ™

Our harvest is packed based on weekly resident orders and delivered for collection β€” helping create consistent work and support our urban farming programme.

A big thank you to the Food Clubs for the partnership, and to the residents who choose to buy from Streetscapes each week πŸ’š

We’ve also started a small Wednesday market at the Vredehoek hub if you’d like to pop by and purchase produce without pre-ordering. We sell fresh organic leafy greens, assorted herbs, eggs, honey, compost and seasonal vegetables.

Streetscapes is proud to support ’ Pads Initiative, which creates employment opportunities for women in need in Cape Town through the labelling and packaging of products. Launched in 2021, the GWW Pads Initiative provides sustainable employment for women in need. ✨

This collaboration is about more than packing boxes β€” it’s about skills development, dignity, income, and pathways to employment.

Through weekly sessions, participants are engaged in structured work opportunities where they:
- Earn an income
- Develop workplace skills such as teamwork, time management, and quality control
- Build confidence and responsibility
- Gain exposure to real production environments

This partnership will impact 50–60 women, providing meaningful work experience and short-term income while strengthening employment readiness.

Collaborations like this are at the heart of what we do. When organisations work together, we can create practical, scalable opportunities that help people move from survival to stability and employment.

A heartfelt thank you to Girls with Wiings for this incredible collaboration β€” we look forward to growing together.

We are always looking for new collaborators who want to create meaningful skills development and income opportunities with us. Let’s work together to create change. πŸ’›

We’re excited to invite you to something truly meaningful πŸ’›

Humans of the Streets β€” a new play facilitated by Mike van Graan, developed with Streetscapes β€” will be showcased this weekend.

πŸ“ Backroom at 6 Spin Street Gallery (opposite Church Square)
πŸ—“ Friday 17 April at 7pm
πŸ—“ Saturday 18 April at 3pm
⏱ 45-minute performance + discussion
🎟 Free entry (donations welcome)

This work-in-progress production tells the real stories of Jonathan Manuel, Staysher Julies, and Cyprian Manqola β€” now peers at Streetscapes who have journeyed from homelessness toward stability and purpose.

These storytellers are not trained actors. They will perform with scripts in hand as they take the incredibly brave step of sharing deeply personal, vulnerable experiences for the very first time. And that’s exactly what makes this so powerful.

Storytelling is a vital part of reintegration and healing.
When our clients share their stories:
✨ Confidence grows
✨ Voices once unheard are amplified
✨ Audiences connect with the human reality of homelessness

This play is more than a performance β€” it’s a space for dignity, empowerment, and connection. Every rehearsal and every audience interaction helps build confidence, public speaking skills, and a renewed sense of identity and belonging.

Entrance is free, and donations (suggested R100) will help cover costs, with a portion shared with the performers themselves.

These are the first showcases in the development of new works β€” and we would love you to be part of the journey. πŸ’›

β€œYes! You and I can end TB.” 🩺🌍

On World TB Day, our community came together in Cape Town to raise awareness and support each other’s health.

At the event, we provided:

TB and HIV testing
Blood pressure and diabetes screenings
Information on TB treatment, linkage to care, and completing treatment
Talks on the connection between TB and HIV, community support, and related social issues
Personal stories and experiences shared by community members
Food parcels and hygiene packs for those in need

We are proud that 96 people were screened for HIV and TB, and that so many conversations were had about health, prevention, and care.

A heartfelt thank you to our partners and hosts: District Six, Green Point Clinic, City of Cape Town, , , and the , as well as all volunteers who made the event possible.

Together, we are making a difference β€” one life at a time.

🏑 Upgrading Our Kuils River Property
At Streetscapes, we take immense pride in our Kuils River farm and home β€” a place of safety, dignity, and development.

Situated on our farm in Kuils River, the house is more than just accommodation. It is a transitional home where individuals rebuild their lives through meaningful work β€” growing fresh produce, caring for bees, tending to chickens, turning organic waste into compost, and engaging in psychosocial support activities.

Residents receive daily psychosocial support from our trusted team, including social auxiliary workers, social workers, and counsellors, ensuring personal growth, healing, and life skills go hand-in-hand with practical experience.

The home and farm operate off-grid, powered by solar energy and supported by recycled water systems β€” reflecting our commitment to sustainability alongside social impact.

We are upgrading the property, including the interior and exterior of the house, surrounding paving, farm structures, office spaces, and infrastructure, to ensure it remains a space of dignity, comfort, and opportunity for everyone who lives and works here.

Every improvement we make strengthens the foundation for transformation, growth, and independence. 🌱

✨ Watch this space for updates β€” we’re excited to share the progress as our Kuils River home and farm continue to grow and evolve!

We’ve launched a Safe Space Pilot πŸ‘

In response to the critical shortage of safe night-time spaces in our city, Streetscapes β€” in partnership with and β€” launched a 3-month Safe Space pilot.

Over three months, the space supported 132 stays, with consistent nightly use and a high number of repeat visits. Many of those accessing the space are navigating chronic homelessness, trauma, and substance use β€” often without stable support systems.

Beyond providing a physically safe environment, the space prioritised psychosocial support and meaningful human connection.

Peer engagement is a key strength of the model.

Around 70% of clients participated in a one-on-one sit-down session with a peer, creating intentional space for support, reflection, grounding and harm-reduction conversations. These engagements are trauma-informed and relationship-based, helping to stabilise individuals in moments of vulnerability.

Multiple referrals were made into Streetscapes programmes for ID support, group programmes and reintegration pathways, ensuring that the Safe Sobering Space acts as an entry point into longer-term care.

This shows that the Safe Sobering Space is not just a place to sober up β€” it is a pathway into stability, dignity and support.

Overall, the pilot demonstrates:

β€’ Consistent nightly demand
β€’ A calm, safe and well-managed environment
β€’ Strong peer–client trust
β€’ Clear pathways into longer-term support

The peer-led approach is working in this environment. It reduces harm, improves night-time safety, and offers people a respectful, trauma-informed space where they are seen, heard and supported.

The next step is expanding peer services into the daytime to reduce repeat stays and strengthen ongoing substance-use support.

Safe spaces matter. Dignity matters. Partnerships work. Community works.
