When the Rain Stops, the Real Struggle Starts.

After the major storm last week, we assisted our beneficiaries in the township as they began picking up the pieces. Most people only see the storm itself, but what we witnessed went far beyond rebuilding walls and roofs.

Heartbreaking to see the exhaustion on the faces of parents. The weight of uncertainty. The silent struggles. The quiet panic of trying to stay strong while everything feels like it is falling apart. Many are facing the emotional shock of losing things that already took years to build and replace.

Then there are our teenagers, becoming emergency adults and forced into survival roles, caring for younger siblings while parents search for help. Young people in our townships carry more responsibility than most people realise. Their strength deserves to be seen. Hiding their fear to stay strong, while learning responsibility through crisis.

A warm thank you to everyone who has contributed to the crisis support needed to restore the safety of the 130 children in our three kindergarten buildings and the orphanage. After gusts of up to 25 m/s, most of our roofs have been severely damaged. Your commitment is the very foundation of our important work 🫶

Ett varmt tack till alla som har bidragit till det krisstöd som behövs för att de 130 barnen i våra tre dagisbyggnader och på barnhemmet ska få tillbaka sin trygghet. Efter kastvindar på upp till 25 m/s har de flesta av våra tak skadats svårt. Ert engagemang är själva stommen i vårt viktiga arbete. 🫶

HELP 🙏

The severe storm has once again caused heartbreaking damage to our community spaces. Roofs are leaking and collapsing, ceilings are falling in, and what makes it especially devastating is that the powerful winds — reaching over 70 km/h — are breaking apart many of the repairs we worked so hard to complete after last year’s storms.

Spaces that were restored with so much effort and care are being damaged all over again, leaving parts of our facilities unsafe for the children and families who rely on us every day.

We urgently need support to repair and rebuild once more. We are appealing to the public, friends, supporters, and local businesses to assist in any way possible — and sharing this post with others on your page. Every contribution, no matter how small, will help us rebuild and restore hope.

On this day, we honour the journey of our nation and the many voices who stood for dignity, equality, and hope.

At A Reaching Hand, Freedom Day reminds us that it lives in every opportunity created, every child uplifted, and every community empowered.

While we celebrate, we are also mindful that too many face daily challenges. Our commitment remains to walk alongside those in need — to bring hope, restore dignity, and help build a future where freedom is truly felt by all.

Let us continue to be the hands and hearts that make freedom real — one life at a time.

Colour, Creativity and Joy 🎨

This week we delivered Easter colouring-in pages and empty egg cartons to our kindergartens in the township —simple tools that sparked creativity, imagination, and fine motor skill development in a fun activity.
And of course… a little Easter treat 🐣 The marshmallows are always a big hit!

Seeing the children immersed in painting, creating, and just being kids reminded us how powerful small moments can be.

Instead of unwrapping gifts, you chose to unwrap hope for our community by sharing your celebration and supporting A Reaching Hand. Your generosity is the greatest gift we could have asked for. Thanks to your friends, R38,000 was raised and gifted, which will provide food for eight months for the children at Sinothando Orphanage.

WHILE MOST OF US SLEEP 🫶 LENIE COOKS

Lenie prepares ingredients the day before, starts cooking at 12am, and wakes again at 3am to check the pots. Slow-cooked, nourishing soup made with loving care.

🍲 Lenie’s favourite soup: a hearty vegetable, lentil & bean soup — simple, nutritious, and full of care.

Three times a week, she prepares three large pots. At the Healthcare Clinic she feeds over 300 mouths per day as well as home deliveries to sick and needy elderly in the community. For many, this meal is essential — nobody should have to take their medication without food.
