Friends of Valkenberg Trust

Friends of Valkenberg Trust We partner with Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital to support the recovery of individuals with SMI Most come from disadvantaged communities.

The Friends of Valkenberg Trust works alongside hospital staff at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital to promote the recovery of people with serious mental illnesses. This is vital, as it means people can get back to their lives, their families, their jobs and their communities! We also recognize and appreciate the team of staff who make recovery possible and serve to remind the larger community, and

the service users themselves, that recovery is possible. Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital serves adults from a diverse area of more than a million people in the Western Cape – from Simon’s Town to Nyanga, Grassy Park to Atlantis. Many have little family or community support and will be in hospital for a number of weeks. Through its 60 volunteers, the Friends of Valkenberg works in conjunction with hospital staff to provide a range of services designed to bring hope and comfort to patients during their stay at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital; meeting direct needs and helping patients along the road to recovery.

🌈 **THANK YOU for making our 67 Steps of Colour Run such an incredible success!** 🌈

What an unforgettable Mandela Day! πŸ’™

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to every single person who joined us for our **67 Steps of Colour Run**. Whether you ran, walked, cheered from the sidelines, volunteered your time, or supported us behind the scenes, you helped make the day one filled with colour, connection, and community spirit.

A very special thank you goes to our amazing volunteers. Your enthusiasm, encouragement, and willingness to serve ensured that every participant had a fun, safe, and memorable experience. We simply couldn't have done it without you.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to our generous sponsors, whose support helped make this event possible:

✨ Community Impact Radio
✨ Roger Solomons – BOSA
✨ Sanlam
✨ Grayhunts Property Solutions
✨ Switch Energy Drink
✨ Beverly-Watkins
✨ Old Mutual Insure

Thank you for believing in our work and for investing in the wellbeing of the patients and community we serve. Your generosity extends far beyond one event. The funds raised and donations received will go a long way in supporting the Friends of Valkenberg Trust's recovery-focused programmes, creating opportunities for hope, healing, dignity, and inclusion for the patients at Valkenberg Hospital.

Finally, thank you to everyone who embraced the spirit of Mandela Day by giving their time, sharing a smile, and celebrating alongside us. Together, we were reminded that even the smallest acts of kindness can create a lasting impact.

Here's to colourful memories, stronger communities, and many more opportunities to make a difference together! πŸŒˆπŸ’™

As the exam season comes to an end, it's important to remember that recovery is just as valuable as preparation.

Many students spend weeks or even months navigating high levels of stress, long study hours, and disrupted routines. While academic achievement is important, so too is taking the time to rest, recharge, and care for your mental health once exams are over.

Recovery can look different for everyone. Whether it’s catching up on sleep, spending time with loved ones, enjoying hobbies, being active, or simply allowing yourself a moment to breathe. These activities help restore energy, reduce stress, and support emotional well-being.

At Friends of Valkenberg, we encourage students to be kind to themselves during this transition period. Rest is not a luxury or a reward, it is an essential part of maintaining good mental health and preventing burnout.

If you've recently completed your exams, take a moment to acknowledge your hard work and give yourself permission to recover. You've earned it. πŸ’™
