Spirit Foundation

Spirit Foundation The second underlying foundation is the ‘Spirit Community Foundation’ (SCF). The third underlying foundation is the ‘Spirit Wildlife Foundation’ (SWF).

The Spirit Foundation is a non-profit organisation established by the Kilbride family to give back to and support education, local communities, and wildlife projects. Established by the Kilbride family in the last decade of the twentieth century, the Spirit Foundation provides a platform for the family and others to support the three unique charitable foundations operating under the umbrella of t

he Spirit Foundation. The Spirit Foundation (our overarching foundation) has established an enviable track record over the past thirty years by assisting worthy causes that have impacted positively and meaningfully on the lives and causes it has identified for assistance. The first of these underlying foundations is the ‘Spirit Education Foundation’ (SEF), which educates scholars from previously disadvantaged communities throughout their entire high school education. This foundation houses all other areas supported by the Spirit Foundation other than education and wildlife conservation. The individual stories of the numerous worthy causes that have benefited from the Spirit Community Foundation are set out in more detail below. This foundation supports the rescue and rehabilitation of endangered animal species and is particularly committed to the care of orphaned rhinos. The Spirit Wildlife Foundation works with some of the world’s most respected professionals within the highly-challenging rescue and rehabilitation arena. The history of the Spirit Foundation is traced to a small industrial town, situated within the English county of Lancashire. With a proud working-class background, the Kilbride family were fortunate enough, via hard work, good luck and grace to be able to assist others less fortunate than themselves. From an early age, Ian Kilbride was exposed to the good works introduced to him by his father, such as Rotary and Free Masonry, as well as the support provided to local schools and homes for the mentally and physically disabled.

We’re all about the theme, “Just doing good”. Spirit Foundation Community Programme General Manager, Steve Palframan, outlines how we make meaningful and lasting impact on communities in need. If poles could talk - work commences on our boma redevelopment:
When Care for Wild first began over 12 years ago, there were no rehabilitation bomas at all. Boma three was one of the very first to be built and over the years has quietly become part of countless rhino stories. If its poles could talk, they would tell stories of long days and sleepless nights, of caregivers sitting beside calves, of first bottles, first steps, setbacks, recoveries, and second chances.
This month marked the beginning of something very special, work has officially started on the redevelopment of Boma three within the Thor Rehabilitation Facility. This project has been long overdue, and we are incredibly excited to finally begin breathing new life into a space that carries so much history.

Care for Wild:
Special moments with our characterful calves. Wyntir continues to recover steadily from her horn injury. It is healing well and gradually closing, with rangers continuing daily treatment and monitoring. Rainbow, however, remains entirely unconcerned with such serious matters and is as mischievous as ever taking on her mother’s role of seeking out vehicles to rub her horn against! One particularly special moment this month saw several of the calves together at once, Rainbow, Sage and others gathered while playing with Tornado, currently the youngest and smallest of the calves. Completely fearless, Tornado seems determined to prove his size means nothing. Like his father Storm, he already carries himself as though he is ready to take on the world!

Care for Wild:
Winter has arrived - how will our orphaned Rhinos cope? For Spirit, Grey, Lilli and Jemu, winter is familiar territory. They know the pattern of cold nights followed by crisp sunny mornings and understand how to move, feed and rest through the season. Muddy has experienced winter before too. For Luke and Jemu’s calf, however, this will be their first. There is something deeply moving in remembering the difference between orphanhood and motherhood. These calves will not spend winter nights in night pens under heaters. Instead, they have what nature intended, the warmth of their mothers beside them.

A feeling of release like no other:
See how the Spirit Foundation, joined the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) in releasing 21 (20 Blue and one adult) African penguins into the sea at Boulders Beach. Unsafe nesting, heat stress, and of course, hatching, mean that SANCCOB has to safely release penguins into the sea. This time, Spirit Foundation Director, Liam Kilbride, and Spirit staff members Samantha Bartes and Arlene Robinson, provided a helping hand in delivering these endangered birds the freedom they deserve. While you are watching, did you know that SANCCOB uses almost a ton of fish per week to feed al the birds in their care, so if you’d like to support their brilliant work and donate a box of fish, at just R175, click the following link: https://tr.ee/FeedAfricanPenguinChicks

iCaddies provide expertise at the Ladies IPT U19 Championship:
A dedicated squad of 52 caddies played a vital role in the success of the event, providing invaluable support to the players. Their hard work not only helped the golfers navigate the course but also secured a much-needed income before the winter period. Many caddies expressed their gratitude for the tips received from the unions, highlighting the camaraderie and teamwork that defines the spirit of golf.

Generational joy as the young visit the 'more advanced' in age:
Our Spirit Foundation ECD learners recently enjoyed a very special outing to Herfsvreugde Old Age Home in Bonnievale. The 4–5-year-old classes visited the elderly residents to spread joy, kindness and connection across generations. During their visit, the learners proudly sang songs for the residents, bringing smiles, laughter, and heartfelt moments to everyone present.
To make the day even sweeter, our learners handed out delicious doughnuts specially prepared by our Head Chef at the Spirit Foundation ECD Programme. The thoughtful gesture was deeply appreciated by the residents and created a warm atmosphere filled with gratitude and joy.

Celebrating Freedom Day at the Spirit Foundation ECD Centres:
In celebration of Freedom Day, our Spirit Foundation ECD learners enjoyed a fun-filled and educational day centred around the meaning of freedom, choice, and democracy.
A special guest speaker visited both of our ECD Centres to explain Freedom Day to our little learners in a simple and engaging way that they could understand. The children learned about the importance of having a voice, making choices and celebrating the freedom we enjoy in South Africa today.
To bring the lesson to life, our learners participated in their very own voting experience. Each child had the opportunity to vote at a mini voting station for either popcorn or hot chocolate, helping them experience the excitement of making a choice and casting a vote. They also made fingerprint marks, just like real voters during elections.

The League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB):
Why circle time at LOFOB is so important. Circle time at LOFOB creates a structured, interactive space where blind and visually impaired children develop critical skills in a safe environment. Concepts that sighted children learn incidentally are facilitated directly through adapted techniques and strategies ensuring that blind and visually impaired children are active participants rather than observers. Circle time forms an important foundation for learning, independence, communication, group participation, and social inclusion.
