TeachOut

TeachOut Non-profitable umbrella organization under Ubunye. We achieve our mission by running after-school and Saturday tutorials in various academic subjects.

TeachOut focuses on going to under resourced schools and centres where UCT students volunteer to dedicate their free time to give back to the community. TeachOut aims to harness the experience and expertise of UCT students to provide academic assistance to high school learners in Cape Town’s disadvantaged communities. The aim of these tutorials is not to replace classroom teaching, but rather to o

ffer learners the opportunity to tackle common problems. This helps learners to build confidence and to identify and correct gaps in their knowledge. Our focus subjects are English, Physical Science and Mathematics. However, we do also tutor Biology, Computer Literacy and Accounting where demand exists. We aim mainly to assist learners in grades 11 and 12, as the content of these grades is examined for school-leaving examinations. TeachOut also has a Functional English Programme for grades 8 to 10, which aims to help learners become comfortable with using spoken English to communicate and express opinions. We now assist primary school learners as well. TeachOut was launched in 2003 by Denni Cartwright, Jacqui Womersley and Stephen York as an initiative of the Smuts Hall and Fuller Hall residences of UCT and began operating as a UCT campus organisation in early 2004. In 2006, TeachOut, The Township Debating League and Inkanyezi formed Ubunye, which is now one of the 5 official development agencies at UCT. TeachOut currently operates at the following schools in the Samora Machel/Philippi areas.
