Imagine being tied to a municipal rubbish bin, on the very day the refuse collectors are due to arrive.

No loving family by your side. No safe place to call home. Just a rope tying you to a bin, with no idea what would happen next.

While rubbish bins were waiting to be emptied, this beautiful girl was waiting for someone to save her.

Fortunately, our Inspectors came to her rescue and brought her to safety at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

And we gave her a name that represented everything we wanted for her future.

When she first arrived, Hope was understandably timid. After such an unsettling experience, she needed time to feel safe, to trust and to discover that there were people who genuinely cared about her.

But with love, patience and the dedication of our team, something wonderful happened.

Today, Hope is a lively, affectionate girl with a wonderfully big personality. She has come such a long way from the dog found tied to a rubbish bin.

At approximately four years old, Hope is a medium-sized girl with a medium energy level, a big heart and plenty of loyalty to offer.

She would thrive in a home with a secure garden, lots of love and a family who will cherish her.

๐Ÿพ She could share her home with a male dog following a successful introduction at our SPCA.

Cockatiels absolutely love sunflower seeds. Given the choice, many will happily pick them over healthier food options. Just like humans, cockatiels can become overweight. Excess body fat can make flying difficult, affect breathing and place additional strain on their bodies. Birds also need regular opportunities to fly and exercise to maintain a healthy weight.

Unlike other pets, weight gain in birds isn't always immediately noticeable because feathers can hide fat deposits. Yellowish fat beneath the skin, particularly around the sides and abdomen, may indicate that your cockatiel is overweight.

If your cockatiel currently eats a predominantly seed-based diet, introduce dietary changes gradually, ideally with guidance from an avian veterinarian.

It's hard to believe that this happy, bright-eyed girl was once a scrawny, neglected dog who desperately needed someone to care.

What began as a simple act of kindness on the side of a busy road would uncover a heartbreaking truth.

When City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Animal Control Auxiliary Unit Officers Alexander and Ndzondzo spotted a dog standing on Baden Powell Drive on 15 October 2026, they knew he needed help.

His front leg was severely swollen, and he was clearly in distress.

They stopped for him. They gave him a name, Mylo. And in the hours that followed, they would discover that the kindness which brought them to his side would also be needed to see him through his final moments.

For Mylo, rescue would mean relief from suffering. And the people who had stopped to help him were there to offer comfort when he needed it most.

The officers stopped traffic, carefully approached him and moved him to safety. With no SPCA Collection Officer nearby, they placed him in their vehicle and drove him directly to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

At first, the officers believed he might have been injured in a motor vehicle accident.

๐๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ž ๐ก๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ญ๐›๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ .

Our veterinarians immediately suspected osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. X-rays confirmed their suspicions and revealed that the cancer had already spread to his lungs.

The swelling was not an injury that could heal. It was a devastating disease causing immense pain.

Even amputation would not have saved him. With no hope of recovery, our veterinary team made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanise him.

This time of year brings a reminder of the growing number of unwanted puppies and kittens who need our help. We continue to appeal to pet owners to have their animals sterilised to help prevent unwanted litters and reduce the cycle of suffering.
