📣Setting the Record Straight: The Cape of Good Hope SPCA's Position on a Proposed Baboon Sanctuary

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has become aware of a series of social media posts published by the Facebook group "Save Scarborough Baboons" alleging that the SPCA supports the proposed baboon sanctuary being considered by the Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (CPBMJTT).

🚨This allegation is false and without foundation. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA rejects the misinformation being circulated and is concerned that members of the public are being misled regarding the SPCA's position.

One of the individuals actively promoting these allegations is Mr Jamie Pieterse, who has also publicly sought to portray himself as an expert on baboons and baboon management. Mr Jamie Pieterse is currently facing two pending prosecutions under the Animals Protection Act in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrates’ Courts for animal cruelty. Those proceedings remain before the courts.

📓For the record, on 13 October 2025, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA formally submitted written representations to the CPBMJTT opposing the establishment of a sanctuary for healthy, free-ranging baboons. Our position was communicated long before the recent social media campaign and remains unchanged.

👉The Cape of Good Hope SPCA does not support the long-term confinement of healthy, free-ranging baboons in a sanctuary environment.

Our submission to the CPBMJTT stated:

"5. Sanctuaries
The SPCA does not support the relocation of wild baboons to sanctuaries. Permanent captivity of healthy, free-ranging baboons, particularly those not in need of rehabilitation or medical intervention, does not serve conservation or welfare objectives. Such an approach would likely result in long-term psychological distress, social disruption, and behavioural abnormalities. We support management actions that prioritise the welfare of baboons in situ and maintain their ability to live freely within natural or semi-natural environments."

🧑‍⚖️The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has consistently advocated for evidence-based, humane and lawful management of the Cape Peninsula's baboon population. Suggestions that the SPCA supports the permanent confinement of healthy wild baboons are simply untrue.

We urge members of the public to exercise caution when relying on information shared on social media. If you have questions about the SPCA's position on any matter, we encourage you to contact us directly or consult our official submissions rather than relying on unverified or misleading posts. 🛑

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA remains committed to protecting the welfare of all animals through science-based decision-making, sound animal welfare principles and the rule of law.

Meet Stormy 🐾 AKA "Smarty Pants," the Clever Boy Who Weathered the Storm

Our Veterinary team didn't nickname him "Smarty Pants" for nothing – Stormy is a very clever, very good boy who's already won over everyone who's met him. ⛈️ Admitted to the SPCA during the Cape Storm, this brave three-year-old has been through a great deal, and he's come out the other side with his sweet spirit fully intact.

Stormy arrived with a serious injury to one of his front limbs, which sadly led to an unavoidable amputation. But don't feel sorry for this resilient boy – he's well on his way to recovery and will go on to lead a wonderfully full life on three legs. 💪

All he needs is a special home that understands his needs, ideally one without too many stairs to climb.

🐾 He's looking for a patient, loving family who'll appreciate his cleverness, embrace his special requirements and give this remarkable boy the bright future he's earned. ✨

35 pets now know the sound of their own front gate, the comfort of a favourite sleeping spot, and the particular joy of belonging to someone.🙏

🎉June was an extraordinary month for adoptions. We almost doubled the number we would usually see during winter, and behind every one of those happy endings was a small village of people who helped make it possible. 💖

💔A cart horse is often seen as a means to an end. A way to move a load from one place to another. Like a vehicle.

But unlike a vehicle engine, a horse has a heartbeat. 💖

He feels fear. He feels pain. And when fear takes over, instinct does the driving. 🐎

This horse was found bleeding after bolting into a steel gate while being driven by two boys, both under the age of 13.

🚨Children are prohibited by law from driving horse drawn carts on public roads for exactly this reason. It places the horse, the child and every road user at risk.

The horse is now safe in SPCA care.

The owner will answer for what happened. 👩‍⚖️

Meet Sheebie 🐾 An Affectionate Shepherd Hoping to Be Cherished Again

Sheebie is an endearing German Shepherd mix with a heart full of affection and a lean-right-up-against-you way of asking for love. 🩶 At around 3 years old, this lovely girl was handed into the SPCA alongside her friend by a family who wanted the very best for them – a safer place to call home.

It's clear Sheebie was well cared for before: she's sterilised, up to date with her vaccinations and arrived with her coat in beautiful condition. Now we're hoping to find her a home where she can once again receive the love, care and attention she was so used to. She's a gentle soul who adores soft petting and will happily lean into you for a cuddle. 🐾

Energetic, lovable and loyal, Sheebie promises to be a wonderful companion. Having previously lived with a male dog of similar size, she could share her home with another dog following a careful introduction – we'd recommend a male companion for the best chance of compatibility. With her sweet, devoted nature, this is a girl who has so much love left to give. ✨
