What a great interview with Salaam media! Although World Hospice Palliative Care Day was on 10 October, the conversations continue. And they are so very important. People need to access care early; that care needs to be available for them, and palliative care is NOT a loss of hope or only appropriate at the end of life. The conversation is available to listen to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKqTfuJbopQ

Our sincere thanks to eNCAnews for speaking with our CEO, Motlalentoa Motsoane, about palliative care.
The more people understand that palliative care can provide valuable support from the point of diagnosis of a serious illness, the better.
The interview also highlights the importance of early referral. South Africa’s National Palliative Care Policy supports access to palliative care from diagnosis, yet one of the biggest barriers remains the widespread perception that it is only for end-of-life care.
Changing that understanding is essential to helping more patients and their loved ones access the support they need, when they need it. https://apcc.org.za/apcc-newsroom/enca-whpcd2026/

With kind permission from eNCA, the full interview is available here:

Palliative care depends on coordination as much as treatment.

Interdisciplinary teams, including nurses, social workers, doctors and spiritual care providers, work together so that patients receive consistent, well-rounded support.

This week, we recognise the case management teams across APCC member organisations who help bring the right people and services together around each patient’s needs.

Lotus FM chatted to our CEO, Motlalentoa Motsoane yesterday afternoon about why many South Africans do not access palliative care when needed, or access it too late. The interview is available to listen to here: https://omny.fm/shows/the-lunch-break/palliative-care-why-early-access-matters-for-patients-and-families-12-october-2026

Palliative care is often misunderstood as care reserved for the final stages of life, but it can begin much earlier to improve quality of life for patients and support their families. In this Lifestyle conversation, Motlalentoa Motsoane, CEO of the Association of Palliative Care Centres of South Afr...

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, an opportunity to build understanding, challenge stigma and encourage people to seek support.

Living with a serious illness can affect how you feel, your relationships and how you cope from day to day. Families and caregivers may also need help with the emotional demands of caring for someone they love.

Palliative care includes emotional and psychological support for patients, families and caregivers, with space to talk about concerns that can be difficult to raise.

Speak to your care team about the support available to you, or find a palliative care provider near you through the APCC directory: https://apcc.org.za/find-a-palliative-care-centre/
