At Contour we are proud to be part of this journey with I Am Water Ocean Conservation. This is a true partnership, I AM WATER’s vision and investment, supported by Contour Enviro Group’s training delivery, creating meaningful pathways for young people from local coastal communities. It is wonderful to see the learners growing in confidence, communication and facilitation skills. Thank you for trusting us to walk this road with you.

Our current Adventure-Based Learning cohort is mid-way through a two-week theory block at our workshop space in Muizenberg.

This week they're working through "Communication in Action" by interpreting texts, presenting, and learning how to pitch the same idea to a Grade 7 class and a room of funders.

Next week they move to Workplace Numeracy: statistics and financial literacy.

All of it sits inside their Further Education and Training Certificate in Adventure-Based Learning, our registered NQF Level 4 qualification where we train young people from our local coastal communities to become ocean and outdoor facilitators.

This week has looked like small group work, highlighted textbooks, group presentations and sticky notes everywhere - definitely a different rhythm from beach days, but every bit as active and fun!

Thanks, as always, to our partners Contour Enviro Group who help us deliver this important programme to our budding facilitators.

ECO RANGER PROGRAMME 2026 | IMMERSION WEEK AT VROLIJKHEID NATURE RESERVE

Our Eco Ranger candidates recently completed their first immersion week at Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve, where theory was brought to life through practical conservation field activities.
The week brought together private candidates and participants representing Wilderness Foundation Africa, CapeNature, and Cape Vulture Nature Reserve a powerful mix of emerging and practising conservation professionals.

During the week, candidates explored:
✔ Ecosystems and ecological resilience
✔ Wildlife conservation and biodiversity monitoring
✔ Conservation data collection and habitat assessment
✔ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications in conservation
Practical activities included wildlife patrols to assess ecosystem and biodiversity threats within the reserve, species identification and behavioural observations, water quality testing, habitat assessments, and using GIS tools to map wildlife and habitat areas.

This is what the Eco Ranger Programme is about practical exposure, field-based learning, and preparing conservation practitioners for real-world environmental challenges.

Today we remember Peter Viljoen with sadness and gratitude. Peter was not only a trusted Catchment Planner and Consultant to Contour Enviro Group, but also a good friend. His contribution, wisdom, and presence touched our team in a meaningful way, and he will be remembered with great respect and fondness. We send our sincere condolences to his family and all who loved him. Rest in peace, Swaer!

We are proud to continue our Training Venue Feature in partnership with CapeNature by showcasing our second Eco Ranger training venue, De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Overberg.

De Hoop is one of CapeNature’s largest natural areas and is known for its striking mix of lowland fynbos, limestone hills, coastal dunes, wetlands, and coastline. It is also linked to the De Hoop Marine Protected Area, adding an important marine conservation dimension to the learning environment.

What makes De Hoop especially significant is that it protects the largest conserved area of lowland fynbos in the Western Cape, making it a powerful setting for environmental learning and conservation awareness.

For our learners, De Hoop is more than a venue it is a living classroom where conservation training is grounded in real landscapes, biodiversity, and the connection between land and sea.

Second stop: De Hoop Nature Reserve where fynbos, wetlands, coastline, and marine conservation come together.

We are excited to launch our Training Venue Feature in partnership with CapeNature, showcasing the incredible nature reserves where our Eco Ranger Training takes place.

We begin with Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve in the Langeberg, a beautiful landscape of mountain slopes, indigenous forest, rocky sandstone terrain, and rich mountain fynbos. CapeNature describes the reserve as being in a transitional rainfall zone, with vegetation that is primarily mountain fynbos, alongside important indigenous forest areas.

For our learners, Grootvadersbosch is more than a venue, it is a living classroom where conservation learning happens in the landscape itself. This is the first feature in our series highlighting the unique ecological settings of Grootvadersbosch, De Hoop, and Vrolijkheid Nature Reserves.

For more on the reserve please follow the link;

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve is a birding destination with more than 196 bird species regularly spotted. Experience walks in the forest, swimming and mountain biking trails.

Our work in invasive alien plant clearing continues to show why restoration matters.

From July 2023 to July 2024, projects across the Greater Cape Town area delivered:
- 311.77 million litres water gains in Steenbras
- 232.1 million litres in Wemmershoek
- 25.23 million litres in Helderberg
- 143 projects completed across key catchments
- Thousands of person-days created

Significant hectares cleared of invasive alien plants

This is more than clearing vegetation. It is about protecting water sources, restoring ecosystems, creating jobs, and building climate resilience.
Every cleared hectare moves us closer to a healthier environment and a more secure future.

Alumni Corner:

We are proud to celebrate stories like Gabriel Springfield’s.

After matric, Gabriel was looking for a path that would help him better understand nature and build practical skills for the future. Through Contour Training Academy’s Eco-Rangers programme, he gained exposure to real-world ecological case studies, practical field learning, excursions, and insights from experts across the conservation sector.

Today, we are inspired to see how this journey has helped him move closer to his goals, including securing college enrolment.

At Contour Training Academy, we believe in creating opportunities that equip young people with knowledge, confidence, and practical conservation skills that can open real doors.

Thank you, Gabriel, for sharing your journey with us.
