With 5.9 million internally displaced people, 761,000+ refugees abroad, and thousands of asylum seekers settling within its own borders, Somalia's migration story is one of the most complex in the world.

Despite the massive scale of movement, the resilience of migrants, host communities, and the government remains striking as they develop policy frameworks under extraordinarily difficult conditions.

🚨 Did you know that thousands of children cross into Malawi every year alone, without family, and without adequate protection?

SIHMA's latest research highlights the reality facing asylum seekers, refugees, and unaccompanied children in Malawi. Despite existing legal frameworks, gaps in implementation continue to put the most vulnerable at serious risk including exploitation, trafficking, and denial of education and healthcare. A research verification workshop held in Mzuzu in April 2026 gathered key stakeholders to validate findings and chart the way forward. We all have a role to play in amplifying these voices and pushing for lasting protection.

We’re excited to share a newly published article examining a critical but often overlooked aspect of Uganda’s refugee protection system: the non-prima facie Refugee Status Determination (RSD) process. While Uganda is widely praised for its progressive policies, this research highlights key gaps between legal frameworks and real-world access particularly for individuals navigating complex procedures with limited support.⁣
⁣
The article underscores the need for reforms to ensure that efficiency, and rights protection extend beyond group-based recognition. ⁣
⁣
This article is based on the research phase of the Enhance Protection and Asylum (EPA) Project, implemented through the MMD Grant Facility of the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and co-funded by the European Union. The Implementing partners of this project include the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town , Scalabrini Institute for Human Mobility in Africa - SIHMA, Consortium for Refugees and Migrants South Africa (CoRMSA), Catholic Centre for Legal Aid Services, Jesuit Refugee Service East Africa

In Angola, laws like 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗡𝗼. 𝟭𝟯/𝟭𝟵 and 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗡𝗼. 𝟭𝟬/𝟭𝟱 reflect a strong commitment to protection. Yet, like many countries managing mobility with limited resources, implementation challenges remain.⁣
⁣
- For the state, the priority is balancing border management, capacity, and national responsibility. ⁣
- For migrants, it is navigating systems that can sometimes leave them in uncertain or vulnerable situations.⁣
⁣
This is especially sensitive for unaccompanied minors, where both protection and practical constraints must be carefully aligned.⁣
⁣
Bridging this gap requires more than policy, it calls for shared understanding, realistic support, and collaboration between institutions, communities, and migrants themselves.⁣
