Beards for Beanies was founded in 2011 and is an important initiative to raise funds and create awareness for the plight of South Africa's street children during the incredibly cold and unforgiving months of winter. Dear Supporter and fellow Beardy

Beards for Beanies was founded in March 2011 and is an initiative to raise funds and, more importantly awareness, for the plight of Cape Town’s stree

t children during the incredibly cold and unforgiving months of winter. Essentially the initial idea was born by a group of philanthropic and community conscious friends who have a cumulative wealth of experience in running similar initiatives both locally as well as nationally and we would encourage you to join us in this pursuit of a better existence for Cape Town’s destitute and homeless, many of whom are small children. We have chosen to focus closer to home for 2 reasons: 1) a definitive area allows us to have maximum impact, and 2) the impact can be simply measured by how many children we can try and keep warm. Cape winter’s are by their very nature harsh and whilst most of us have the opportunity to simply close our windows and turn up the heaters there are a lot for whom this luxury is but a distant stranger, a destination only heard of but never travelled to. Donate a paltry R150 and receive 2 beanies knitted by Gogo Knit (a well established and extremely efficient NGO employing African Gogo’s to knit the Beanies). You therefore have one Beanie to keep yourself warm and, more importantly, the other Beanie will be given to a street child or homeless individual in the Cape Town region. So, in essence, your greatly appreciated R150 accomplishes 3 key objectives:

1) It employs and pays an elderly ‘Gogo’ to knit the pair of Beanies.
2) It serves to give a homeless / street child a Beanie for winter.
3) You receive an identical Beanie to either keep or hand to someone
needy yourself. Once all the funds have been raised we will hop in The Beanie Bus and distribute the Beanies at 5 selected shelters (or more, depending on the amount raised). We would of course dearly love to include our female audience in this initiative and would encourage you to simply convince the man in your life to partake or simply make a donation of R150 yourselves. We would like to thank you in advance for your interest in this initiative and are excited about its potential and aims. Please keep an eye on this page for updates and follow us on Twitter

Thank you for your support in this initiative.
