He had a name.
She had a story.
They both had a home once.

We often walk past people sleeping on pavements, under bridges, outside shops, or on pieces of cardboard.

And sometimes, without meaning to, we stop seeing the person.

But behind every face is a story.

Someone who once had dreams.
Someone who loved and was loved.
Someone who worked, struggled, lost, hoped, and kept going.
Someone whose circumstances may have changed through unemployment, family breakdown, poverty, displacement, addiction, mental health challenges, rising living costs, or simply a series of events that became too difficult to overcome.

Homelessness is not an identity.

It is a circumstance.

Homeless Awareness Month and International Homeless Day remind us to look again — and to look with humanity.

Not everyone without a home has lost their worth.
Not everyone on the street has lost hope.
And not everyone needs judgment.

Sometimes, what a person needs most is to be treated like a person.

A warm meal.
A conversation.
A blanket.
A safe place.
A helping hand.
Access to support.
An opportunity.
And most importantly — dignity.

We may not be able to solve homelessness on our own.

But we can choose not to look away.

We can learn.
We can listen.
We can support organisations doing the hard work.
We can give responsibly.
We can advocate for solutions.
And we can remind someone that their circumstances do not define their value.

This month, let’s not simply raise awareness of homelessness.
Let’s raise awareness of the human beings experiencing it.

Because a person without a house is still a person with a heart, a history, a name, and a future.

And sometimes, changing a life begins with something as simple as saying:

“I see you.”
