FoodForward SA Securing quality food. Nourishing lives. Established in 2009 to address widespread food insecurity in South Africa.

Learn more and support us at www.foodforwardsa.org One third of all food produced in South Africa is dumped in landfill, while approximately 30 million people are food insecure. FoodForward SA is the catalyst that connects a world of excess to a world of need. Started in 2009, FoodForward SA was established on the premise that there is a significant amount of surplus food in the supply chain that

can be harnessed to address the problem of food insecurity. We have a national network of warehouses and logistics infrastructure across the county and have the infrastructural capacity to manage projects on a national scale. In partnership with major food retailers, farmers, wholesalers and manufacturers, we recover edible surplus food and non-food products for redistribution to registered and vetted beneficiary organisations that offer developmental services in the areas of childcare, youth empowerment, disability, frail care and more.

On World Environment Day, attention turns to the planet, and one of the most immediate climate opportunities is already within reach.

In South Africa, millions face food insecurity while quality edible surplus food is still lost in the system. This is where FoodForward SA makes a measurable difference.

By recovering surplus food and redirecting it to thousands of beneficiary organisations, FoodForward SA turns surplus into impact and prevents emissions.

Food waste is not inevitable. It is fixable. And fixing it is climate action we can scale right now.

A heartfelt thank you to Zero to Landfill Organics (ZTL) for their generous donation of compost to support our Food Gardens Connect Programme in the Western Cape.

As our network of community food gardens grows from 9 to 24 gardens, this contribution comes at exactly the right time.

Establishing new gardens requires the right resources, and quality compost provides a valuable foundation for healthy, productive growing spaces.

We're so grateful for ZTL's support and commitment to creating impact beyond waste management. By transforming organic waste into a resource that helps communities grow fresh produce, they are contributing to both environmental sustainability and food security.

Thank you for helping our gardens get off to the strongest possible start!

Today is World Hunger Day, a reminder that millions of people across South Africa still face daily food insecurity.

As the Hunger Month campaign with Food Lover's Market marks its 10th anniversary, there’s still time to help raise 10 million meals by 31 May.

Add 47 cents to your purchase at the till when shopping at any Food Lover’s Market, FreshStop, VetsMart, or Food Lover’s Eatery store nationwide.

Every small contribution helps us recover quality surplus food and get it safely to people who need it most.

At FoodForward SA, we are seeing a significant increase in demand as winter deepens across South Africa.

Rising fuel costs, persistently high food prices, and ongoing economic pressure are forcing vulnerable households to stretch already limited resources even further, while recent flooding in several communities has added to the growing need for food support.

The months ahead are going to be tough, but together, we can make a meaningful difference. Here’s how you can help.

A big THANK YOU to Mars, Incorporated, Tiger Brands, OneFarm Impact, Massmart, The Noodle Factory, Nedbank, and Vumatel for stepping in to support families that have been impacted by this disaster – allowing for nutritious cooked meals while they rebuild their homes.

We’re excited to welcome representatives from four incubator food banks this week - Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Mauritius, and Mozambique, as part of The Global FoodBanking Network Fellowship Exchange at the FoodForward SA National Office in Cape Town.

This fellowship exchange is designed to provide hands-on training and practical experience in establishing and operating food banks in regions facing acute food insecurity. It also offers participants valuable insight into FoodForward SA’s model, systems, and approach as the largest food bank on the African continent.

FoodForward SA is responding to devastating floods in the Western Cape, supporting 5,500 affected and displaced people living in temporary shelters in Khayelitsha, Philippi, and Mfuleni in Cape Town.

Working with our local Beneficiary Organisation network partners and the Disaster Management team, we are providing cooked meals and healthy snacks to displaced communities.
