Changing the narrative on su***de 💬

With September being Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month, it is important to think about how we understand and talk about su***de. Often, su***de related stigma discourages people from seeking help. We also need to consider how we talk about su***de as stigma is often reflected in the language we use.

Reaching out to speak to someone is not easy. If today is feeling heavy, talk to us. We are here to listen 🧡

Charlie’s Loop is back in Cape Town.

On Saturday, 12 September at 11:00, join us at Le Sueur Ave in Constantia Heights for a 7km loop run, with as many loops as you’re up for, from 1 to the full 5. This is the final and community element of PAIN 134, an ultramarathon run each year in Edinburgh, Melbourne and Cape Town.

Charlie’s Loop was created by Smls founder Danny Allan after losing his best friend Charlie to su***de in his late teens. Each year the loop grows by 1km, marking the age Charlie would have been. It exists to raise awareness and funding for the mental health crisis facing young people.

Every rand raised goes straight to LifeLine Western Cape, keeping our confidential counselling services, over WhatsApp, phone and in person, affordable and accessible to anyone who needs them.

Entry is R150. Not running? You can still buy a ticket to support the cause.

Search “PAIN 134 and Charlies Loop Cape Town” on Quicket to enter or donate.

This Mandela Day, we’re honouring Madiba the way we know best: by listening.

At the core of what we do as counsellors, who volunteer our time, is one thing: learning to listen. It has transformed our own lives, and it’s what allows us to meet another person human to human, no matter what they bring as part of their story. The power of listening is transformational.

Mandela gave 67 years of his life to serving others by fighting for justice and freedom. In his honour, we’re pledging 67 minutes to listen, because sometimes the most powerful thing you can offer someone is your full, unhurried attention.

This year, we’re asking you to do the same.
Find 67 minutes today. Sit with someone you love, or a stranger who needs it, and simply listen. No fixing. No advice. Just presence. You never know how much a single conversation can carry someone.

If you or someone you know needs to talk, LifeLine Western Cape is here every day, 10am -10pm.
