You thought this was settled.
The Constitution already protects religious freedom in South Africa. People are free to hold their faith and practise it as they choose.

That protection matters now more than ever.

The state and the CRL Commission have no business enforcing orthodoxy. No faith community should be controlled or told what it may believe.

FOR SA spoke this morning at the Religious Freedom Imbizo at the Castle of Good Hope... the opposition to the CRL's agenda and the push towards a legislative framework to implement State regulation of religion was UNANIMOUSLY rejected.

📌 In August, Parliament asked the CRL Rights Commission to do two clear things: make its Section 22 Committee more inclusive, and reform it. Faith leaders had good reason to expect change.

🔍 Two provinces of hearings later, little has changed. The Commission offered to bring in its critics, but only if they first accepted its mandate and the need for new legislation. Those are the very questions in dispute. In FOR SA's view, that makes agreeing with the outcome the price of entry.

🗣️ Leaders who attended in Cape Town and Gauteng describe a process that felt built to persuade, not to listen. Yet every submission deserves to be weighed on its merits, including the more than 24,000 recorded on DearSouthAfrica, over 96% of which opposed the process.

⚖️ The sector is not asking to be unaccountable. It already has its own Charter and Code of Conduct. Accountability, yes. State regulation of religion under another name, no.

A broad one size fits all structure leaves too many questions unanswered.

Broad licensing, monitoring and management systems go far beyond basic criminal accountability. Enforcing standards that reach that deep into faith communities carries real risk.

The proposed legislation even includes sanctions. Individuals could be deregistered entirely. Think about what that means for who is allowed to lead and to preach.

Real abuse should be prosecuted under existing law. Handing the state sweeping control over the church is a different thing altogether.

Religious freedom in South Africa is under threat.

Heinz Winckler breaks down the CRL Section 22 committee and its mandate. He explains why proposed government regulation puts churches at risk. The Commission calls it protection. In reality it is state control of religion.

Parliament rejected this same push in 2018 as unconstitutional. Now it is back. If religious freedom falls, every other right follows. Every Christian needs to understand what is at stake.
