How many more women must die before prevention becomes a national priority?
When it comes to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), responding after women have been harmed is not enough. Prevention must be funded, institutions must be held accountable, and warning signs must trigger early intervention.

Sonke's Mpiwa Mangwiro-Tsanga calls for a coordinated, adequately funded national prevention system that acts on warning signs, strengthens accountability, and prevents violence before another life is lost.

Prevention must be more than a promise. It must be a national priority.

When the protector becomes the perpetrator, who protects us?

The fight against cannot succeed when the very institutions entrusted with protecting women and children are undermined by allegations of sexual violence, abuse of power and toxic masculinity.

Sonke's Co-Executive Director Bafana Khumalo asks a difficult but necessary question in this op-ed article: How can women trust the police to protect them when those within the system are themselves accused of abusing their power?

The answer cannot be silence or institutional protection.

Sonke is seeking an experienced consultant, consultancy firm or institution to conduct an independent endline evaluation of its project strengthening the rights of children and youth to protection from sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and promoting advocacy in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

The evaluation will focus on the project’s work in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro and Amathole District Municipality, including meaningful youth participation, gender-transformative approaches, child safeguarding and lessons for future programming.

While we are still seeking justice for the recent killings of about 9 women in SA, we are now faced with another case of gender-based violence. What happened at VLAMO Restaurant in Sandton is a stark reminder of how quickly entitlement can turn a woman’s "NO" into a threat to her safety.

A man reportedly followed women into a bathroom after they rejected his advances and threatened to shoot them.

Sonke Gender Justice is calling for a swift criminal investigation, accountability, and stronger safety measures in hospitality spaces. No means NO and must be respected every time.
