Iliso Care Society

Iliso Care Society A community based non-profit organisation within Khayelitsha, Cape Town that provides educational pr ICS was initiated by Mrs. Vivian Zilo in June 2005.

liso Care Society is situated in Site C in the township of Khayelitsha. Khayelitsha is a large community outside of the city of Cape Town, located 25 kilometers from the city centre. With the help of four other women she began providing services to her community. She knew from her work as a research assistant for Stellenbosch University (Vivian did site visits and counseling in the area) that thos

e suffering from HIV/AIDS were often too weak to be take the medicine she administered, because of undernourishment. She decided to start the work of Iliso in the area were the need was the greatest. It started out as a soup kitchen, but soon the project expanded to include helping school children, providing safety and care for orphans and vulnerable children. Further, Iliso Care Society also organizes workshops for youth to help them cope with problems they face in the community.

Strengthening Partnerships for Safer Schools & Stronger Communities.

Iliso Care Society is proud to be part of today’s engagement: The Crime Prevention Program hosted by the Western Cape Department of Social Development – Khayelitsha SDA2 Office.
Why these partnerships matter to us:
- They allow us to reach vulnerable learners early with the right support.
- We learn from other stakeholders and align our behavioral programs with SAPS, DSD Probation Services, and substance abuse interventions.
- Collaboration means we don’t work in silos. We tackle bullying, gangsterism, school dropouts, and peer pressure as a united front.

A special thank you to the Western Cape Department of Social Development Khayelitsha SDA2 Office and Program Facilitator Makhaya TakaLimi McJazz Jezile for the invite and for creating space for meaningful collaboration.

Today our facilitators had the opportunity to attend the “Abuse No More Protocol” workshop hosted by the Western Cape Education Department.

The workshop focused on strengthening child protection, safeguarding practices, and creating safer learning environments within schools and communities.

This workshop was very important for our facilitators as they work directly with children and young people through our life skills, psycho-social support, tutoring, and school-based programmes. It equipped them with critical knowledge on identifying, responding to, and reporting cases of child abuse, neglect, bullying, and other safeguarding concerns affecting learners.

The training also strengthened our facilitators’ understanding of professional conduct, child protection protocols, referral pathways, and the importance of early intervention when working with vulnerable children. This knowledge will assist them in creating safe, supportive, and inclusive spaces where learners feel protected, heard, and empowered.

Strengthening partnerships between community organisations and schools helps ensure that learners receive the necessary support both academically and emotionally. Through this collaboration, we continue building safer school communities where children can learn and thrive without fear of abuse or harm.

We appreciate the Department of Education for creating platforms that empower facilitators, educators, and stakeholders with the tools needed to protect and support every child.
