CATSA - Catalysis Society of South Africa To promote unity across the nation, the auspices of CATSA hold an annual catalysis conference that takes place at a different venue each year.

The Catalysis Society of South Africa (CATSA) is an organization that aims to promote the advancement of sustainable catalysis amongst academia and the chemical industry in South Africa. This provides a forum for the sharing of knowledge and expertise in the fields of homo- and heterogeneous catalysis, while giving young scientists and engineers the opportunity to present their work. This yearly event also includes a touring visit of an eminent international researcher in the field of catalysis, strengthening ongoing collaborations and encouraging new ones to form. We gratefully acknowledge the support from our industrial partners allowing us to expand our reaches. The Catalysis Society of South Africa remains committed to this endeavor and welcomes contributions and suggestions.

On Thursday, 3 September 2026, , in collaboration with Verder Scientific Africa, co-hosted the Material Characterisation and Clean Energy Seminar, inspired by the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded for the development of metal-organic frameworks.

The seminar explored how advanced materials, catalysts and analytical characterisation techniques can accelerate innovation in and low-carbon technologies.

Catalysts play a critical role in improving the efficiency of chemical reactions, making them essential to the development of cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

Through knowledge-sharing platforms such as this seminar, the CSIR and its partners were able to translate materials science expertise and characterisation capabilities into technologies that support South Africa’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon energy future.

Highveld Catalysis (Former Gauteng Catalysis Forum) invites you to the 9th Highveld Catalysis Workshop to be hosted at the University of Pretoria on 23 October 2026. The workshop will focus on X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) as a key technique for characterisation of catalysts and material.

❓Did you know that according to the Department of Transport, air travel by the general public contributes about 8% of carbon dioxide emitted by the transportation sector in South Africa? In addition, the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, is the airport responsible for the largest emissions of carbon dioxide on the entire African continent. As such, due to concerted efforts such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), there arises a need to invest in technologies and industries that seek to address climate action.

⚡CATSA Executives Sprint for Power-to-X Business Cases

On 13 August 2026, Professor Nico Fischer (Secretary) and Mr Zama Duma (Media Officer) were invited by the Southern African-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry to a PtX Business Case Laboratory at Radisson Red Rosebank, Johannesburg.🏙️🤝

The multi-disciplinary business case lab aimed to conceptualise low-carbon hydrogen technologies 💧⚡ to foster the development of futuristic value-added chemicals and e-fuels. Brilliant pitches, developed with precision and speed🏃‍♂️💡, on renewable diesel production 🛢️🌱 and methanol conversion to sustainable aviation fuels ✈️♻️were assessed.

The laboratory noted that PtX projects are not mutually exclusive and will need to be developed concurrently to reach a critical mass necessary for large volumes of e-fuels by 2050📈🌍.

🎉 Congratulations to Professor Selwyn F. Mapolie, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award

Prof.Selwyn Mapolie is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Stellenbosch University, where he served as Professor of Inorganic Chemistry from 2008 until his retirement in 2024. He previously spent around 17 years at the University of the Western Cape, progressing from Lecturer to Professor of Inorganic Chemistry and serving as Deputy Dean of Science before joining Stellenbosch University in 2008.

Professor Mapolie's career has been distinguished not only by scientific excellence, but also by his commitment to mentorship, collaboration, and the advancement of catalysis and inorganic chemistry in South Africa.
