Project spotlight: Mistbelt Habitat Restoration Project 🌳🌱

Near Hogsback, ancient Mistbelt forests face intense fragmentation from historical logging and aggressive alien plant invasions. This fragile habitat is home to the endangered, endemic Cape Parrot, with fewer than 1,800 individuals remaining in the wild.

To safeguard this ecosystem, the Greenpop Foundation partnered with the Cape Parrot Project (a Wild Bird Trust initiative) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). Together with the neighbouring iZingcuka community, this network clears invasive species, plants trees to establish connectivity between forest patches, and runs school education drives to inspire long-term conservation.

We'd like to extend a thank you to our collaborating partners: Cape Parrot Project (Wild Bird Trust) and Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

A special thank you to this project's notable donor as well, Refinitiv.

At its core, sustainable development is about empowering communities 💚

Through our Heineken South Africa Green Zones project, we selected 10 inspirational grassroots champions across 4 major South African cities. While the physical impact includes establishing 10 diverse greenzones - incorporating art, infrastructure, biodiversity gardens, agroforestry, and food gardens - the true magic lies in our collective learning journey.

We are proud to introduce the Greenpop Academy, our emerging ed-tech space.

Our first programme, "Community-Led Strategies for Lasting Change," successfully established a community of practice for our 10 partners. Following a hybrid format of online webinars and an in-person workshop, the cohort is now ready for the next step.

This week, our 7 Johannesburg and Pretoria partners came together to recap the course and present their Capstone projects: revised organizational strategies designed for lasting regional impact. This session offers a unique space for peer-to-peer feedback and expert guidance from our lead facilitators.

Congratulations to all our partners on driving sustainable, community-led change. 🌍

Project spotlight: Mulanje Landscape Restoration Project 🌱🌳🇲🇼

In Malawi’s spectacular Mulanje District, severe ecosystem degradation is met with a powerful spirit of collective action. In a holistic partnership with the Mulanje Mission Hospital, this project embraces the philosophy that human well-being and ecological health thrive together. By combining forest landscape restoration with community-led sustainable development initiatives, the project actively empowers local families as guardians of their own environment - fostering climate resilience and a healthier, greener future for all.

We'd like to extend a thank you to our collaborating partner, Mulanje Mission Hospital. A special thank you to this project's notable donors as well, DHL Africa and The Ackerman Foundation, Inc..

Project spotlight: Uilenkraal Valley Restoration Project 🌳🌱

The Uilenkraal Valley is home to Africa’s southernmost indigenous forest. This ancient landscape features relic trees over 1,000 years old and supports remarkable biodiversity, including the elusive Cape leopard. Growing in deep, sandy, alkaline soils with low annual rainfall, these woodlands defy conventional forest ecology.

Centuries of agricultural clearance, intense wildfires, and alien plant invasions left only fragmented patches of indigenous forest. To safeguard this natural heritage, Greenpop partnered with local landowners and conservation trusts to clear invasive vegetation, plant indigenous trees, and establish vital ecological corridors between forest remnants.

We'd like to extend a thank you to our collaborating partners: Tree Liberation Front, Platbos Forest Reserve Conservation Trust, Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat, Bodhi Forest and Kleinbos.

A special thank you to this project's notable donors as well, BOS and Ninety One South Africa .

Recap of our Community Propagation Workshop at Philippi Village!🌱

On Wednesday, 27 May, our Urban Greening team and 41 incredible community members gathered for an exciting workshop: the very first learning event hosted in the brand-new Plant Nursery at Philippi Village (PV)!

Our Living Landscapes programme continues its mission to create sustainable, green urban environments that enhance biodiversity and foster community cohesion. This new nursery will soon produce plants, which will be planted in the backlands of PV, becoming not only a space for learning and community gathering, but a hub for real economic opportunity.

The day was packed with high-energy productivity as hundreds of plants were propagated and vegetable seeds sown! A massive shout-out to B***o Tech for demoing their innovative wheelbarrows - they are lending Philippi Village a b***o to trial, and we can’t wait to see how it boosts productivity for the PV Green Space Activators!

The team at Go2Africa played a significant role in nurturing this project by generously sponsoring the workshop. While they couldn't join us on the day, they have supported the Living Landscapes project at Philippi Village from the start, seeing the vision with us every step of the way!

Thank you to Go2Africa for your investment and continuous support in helping nurture and grow these exciting projects, BOS for keeping everyone refreshed with delicious iced teas, and all the community members from Philippi and surrounding areas who joined us. Also, a huge shoutout to our partners Philippi Village for helping to make this day a reality. We had so much fun with you! 🌍

Before ➡️ After of our Greenpop Gala decor at The Olive Press, ✨️🥂🫒

The Greenpop Gala was designed to embody sustainable eventing excellence. We were guided by a Green Standard across all decision-making for the Greenpop Gala:

💨 Carbon negative: To offset event emissions and guest travel, Greenpop gifted all Gala attendees a custom Tree Ring linked to a real planted tree, complete with engraved GPS coordinates. This initiative planted 200 trees, contributing to long-term carbon sequestration and connecting guests directly to our ecosystem restoration work.

📜 Lower-Impact Materials & Decor
Paper elements used recycled seed paper from , while wooden décor was crafted from sustainably sourced invasive wood by . The majority of event décor and furniture was rented, repurposed, or borrowed, significantly reducing the need for new production.

♻️ Circular Waste Management
Our commitment to zero waste to landfill was supported by Boschendal’s on-site waste systems. Recyclables and glass entered closed-loop recycling streams, while food scraps and organic waste were composted and returned to the estate's agricultural systems.

🥗 Seasonal, Plant-Based Dining
The evening featured a fully vegetarian menu with a lighter environmental footprint. Developed with the Boschendal team, the menu celebrated seasonal ingredients sourced directly from the Werf food garden and local growers.

🌳 Sustainability by Design
We hosted the Gala at Boschendal due to their rigorous environmental systems and long-standing commitment to sustainability. Partnering with them allowed us to align the event with best-practice resource management from the outset.

💚 Conscious Procurement
Wherever possible, we prioritised partners, suppliers, and service providers who demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility, extending the Gala's positive impact well beyond the event itself.
