Exciting announcement from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification COP17 Mongolia! πŸ‡²πŸ‡³πŸŒ

πŸ“’ Today the CSO-Led Declaration on Land, Peace & Security was launched. It is a landmark call, endorsed by 480+ organisations across 80+ countries, to recognise land restoration as a tool for conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Greenpop is proud to stand among the endorsing organisations! Restoring degraded land isn't separate from building stable, secure futures β€” it is how you build them. This is a truth we see echoed by the communities we work with every day.

Alongside the Declaration, a powerful new short film, produced by Surge Africa and The Skylark Centre for Climate Security brings this to life, showing how land, peace and security are interconnected, through risk but especially through community-led solutions.

We spent two incredible days at Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital for the SPH Living Landscapes Project, where we were joined by an amazing group of volunteers to help us transform the space! 🌱πŸͺ¨

Together we:
πŸͺ΄ Planted over 900 indigenous plants
🌱 Created 300m² of garden beds
πŸͺ¨ Moved 100+ boulders and rocks
πŸͺ Shovelled 7mΒ³ of organic compost & laid 7mΒ³ of wood chips
♻️ Collected 2+ black bags of rubbish
🐝 ...and survived a few bee stings along the way!

A massive thank you to everyone who showed up, boogied with us, and gave back. On behalf of Greenpop, Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital and Stellenbosch University, we appreciate your incredible energy and support!

Project spotlight: Museum of Plastic 🎨πŸ₯€β™»οΈ

Built on the premise that future generations can learn from current plastic activism, this initiative established the world’s first virtual metaverse museum dedicated to environmental stewardship. Developed to challenge the global plastic crisis, the project beautifully fuses art, science, and digital technology to transform passive viewers into active environmental advocates.

Six South African street artists were trained to paint and sculpt using Open Brush Virtual Reality (VR) software. Merging paint and pixels, the artists created striking real-world public murals across local communities, while simultaneously crafting corresponding 3D masterpieces inside a free, globally accessible digital gallery. This compelling campaign pushed creative boundaries, culminating in a showcase at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.

We'd like to extend a thank you to our collaborating partners, Cooperative Innovations and Baz-Art.

A special thank you as well to our notable Donors: British Council under the Climate Connection programme.

Project spotlight: We Are Nature: Youth Biodiversity Challenge πŸ“²πŸŒ±

A collaboration between UNEP and Greenpop and co-designed with young representatives from over 20 global youth networks, this pioneering initiative bridges the gap between online engagement and tangible ecological restoration. The project directly tackles eco-anxiety by empowering young leaders across the Global South to champion biodiversity protection.

At the core of the movement is NatureBuddy, an interactive WhatsApp chatbot that guides participants through a gamified, three-level journey: Educate, Collaborate, and Activate. By delivering culturally relevant environmental education through an accessible, everyday messaging platform, the project transforms climate awareness into verifiable community conservation action.

We'd like to extend a thank you to our collaborating partners, United Nations Environment Programme NMMUN 2016, African Wildlife Foundation, WESSA Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa, and Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN)
