Cape Town Pelagics

It was a successful day at sea on Saturday 18 July with our pelagic trip guided by Dalton Gibbs. We located fishing vessels pulling their nets which caused a feeding frenzy amongst the pelagic birds waiting patiently behind the trawler! Amongst the melee of birds we picked up a beautiful Northern Royal Albatross, Southern Fulmars and both Giant Petrel species. 100's of Cape Petrels and three Humpback Whales on our way out to sea.

We ran a trip on Saturday for private clients. A trawler in action attracted 1000's of birds. Six species albatross! The highlights were TWO Wandering Albatrosses, a Southern Royal, Southern Fulmars and a Soft-plumaged Petrel. What a fantastic day at sea!

Yesterday's pelagic got some good birding highlights: One white-backed albatross, which was likely a Southern Royal - still to be ID'd from photos - a couple of Spectacled Petrels and three Manx Shearwaters amongst lots of the regular species behind a long-liner. We enjoyed some lovely non birding highlights too! Two Loggerhead Turtles, a Green Sea Turtle, a Sunfish and approximately 30 Risso's Dolphins passing the boat.
