Khululeka Grief Support Khululeka Grief Support is a Non-Profit Organisation based in Cape Town.

We focus on mental health support programmes for at risk children and teens and training of those working with them

Yesterday, the Khululeka team visited Etafeni Day Care Centre Trust in Nyanga for a mentoring session with their team. Mentoring is where training turns into practice, and this session was a chance to reflect together on the training Khululeka offered and how it has helped the organisation.
We talked through how the team has put what they learned into practice, what has worked, and what they want to build on next.
Thank you to the Etafeni team for your openness, your commitment and the care you bring to the children and families you serve. We are proud to walk alongside you.

Khu Kit Training: practical tools for the adults who support grieving children

You don't have to be a counsellor to support a child who is grieving. This training helps teachers, caregivers, youth workers and community volunteers recognise grief, start supportive conversations and use creative tools that help children express what is hard to put into words.

Not all grief gets recognised.
Disenfranchised grief is grief that isn’t openly acknowledged or supported, often because the loss is seen as “less important,” is surrounded by stigma, or because children are told they are too young to understand.
When a child’s grief goes unseen, they may learn to hide it, and it can come out as changes in behaviour, withdrawal or struggles at school.
The most powerful thing an adult can do is name the loss, take it seriously and make space for the child to feel what they feel.

We are proud to be one of the 55 partner organisations across 11 countries selected as a grantee of the Born This Way Foundation’s $5 million commitment to supporting young people’s mental health.

Through our Abangane Grief Support Programme, we help children and young people navigate grief, loss and trauma, providing safe spaces where they can be heard, develop coping skills and know they are not alone.

As we mark Mental Health Awareness Month this October, we are grateful to the Born This Way Foundation for recognising the importance of youth mental health and investing in the work of community-based organisations like ours. Together, we can ensure that more young people receive the care, compassion and support they deserve.

After a loss, children often can’t put their feelings into words. Instead, their distress can show up as anger, withdrawal, clinginess, trouble concentrating, changes in sleep or appetite, or physical complaints like tummy aches.
These signs are easily mistaken for misbehaviour. But very often, they are a child’s way of saying “I’m struggling.”
The next time a child’s behaviour worries you, try getting curious instead of reacting: what might this be telling me? Reassurance, routine and a calm, caring adult can make a real difference.

Losing a parent or caregiver is one of the most extreme losses a child can face, shaking their basic sense of safety in the world. How they’re supported through it shapes how they cope with loss for life. Unsupported grief can raise the risk of emotional and behavioural struggles, but meeting a child’s basic needs during this time can make a real difference. Early support matters.

Most psychosocial support happens once, in response to a crisis. Through the Western Cape Education Department (WECD), the Wellness Hub Model is Khululeka’s answer to that gap: a coordinated, long-term partnership that brings prevention, early intervention and referral together, inside the school.

Through the Hub, Khululeka offers Abangane grief support groups, individual counselling and referral, Girl Power groups, teacher wellness support, and close engagement with school leadership and School-Based Support Teams.
Currently running in schools across Cape Town, in partnership with the WCED.

Breaking the Cycle: Gangs, Masculinity, Youth and GBV

Khululeka was honoured to join the Commission for Gender Equality’s community-centred think tank on the links between gangsterism and gender-based violence.

The conversation brought together a range of role players to explore how gangsterism, masculinity and youth development connect to GBV, and to discuss methodologies, programmes and approaches that could help address both.

Our work supporting children and youth through trauma, grief and loss formed part of the conversation, highlighting how early psychosocial support can play a role in breaking cycles of violence before they take root.

Thank you to the Commission for Gender Equality for convening this space and for including Khululeka in the discussion.

We are proud to have provided the Abangane grief support programme to the learners at Sonderend Primary School.
Our facilitators worked to create a safe space where children could feel heard, supported and understood. Seeing these learners celebrate their certificates is a moment we are so proud of.
Thank you to the school staff for the partnership and for the care you show your learners every day.
