β€œBlack Sash has been the conscience of white South Africa." Nelson Mandela

After Madiba’s release, his words reminded us of the role Black Sash played and the responsibility that continues today.
To the next generation: in your own space, in your own work, be that conscience. Continue to stand for justice, equality, and dignity for all.

This powerful reflection is part of our 70th Anniversary Documentary, exploring who Black Sash was, who we are, and the future we are building.

In 1958, the first Black Sash Advice Office opened in Athlone, providing legal advice, bail support, and assistance to those in need.

What started as one office became a lifeline for many today, Advice Offices work in communities across South Africa.

This is one of the stories featured in our 70th Anniversary Documentary, reflecting on our past, present, and the future we are building.

National Education and Training Manager, Amanda Rinquest, joined ENS Pro Bono at their Mitchells Plain office to conduct a capacitation workshop with staff from the Mitchells Plain Advice Office.

The training, informed by the needs of the advice office, focused on two key areas: court structures in South Africa and protection orders. It provided an overview of specialised courts and the different forums available for relief.

The session also explained what constitutes harassment and how advice office staff can assist victims in accessing protection orders.

πŸ“’ New Series: Social Protection Floor

Page 4
