Happy Valley Home AGM: Reflecting on 30 Years of Service

Yesterday, Happy Valley Home held its Annual General Meeting, chaired by Simon Liell-Cock, bringing together our community to reflect on the past year and celebrate 30 years of service to the community since 1996.

The meeting included a special motivational talk by John-Ray Knighton F**t, CEO of U-turn Homeless Ministries, and a blessing from Frank Koch of the United Evangelical Fellowship .

Among the highlights of the past year were 13 family reunifications, 71,000 meals served and community donations of more than 15,000 meals and 130 bags of clothing to others in need in Red Hill, Ocean View and Masiphumele, overseen by shelter manager Patrick Msakayeya.

As we mark three decades of service, we also took the opportunity to reflect on Happy Valley Home’s journey, acknowledge the work that has brought us this far, and elect new members to our board as we look towards the future.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey over the past 30 years. Your support helps us continue our work with homeless adults in the Southern Peninsula, supporting them on their journey towards greater stability and independent living.

Here’s to continuing this important work together.

On 27 August, a group of residents from Happy Valley Home visited Simon's Town Library for a creative writing workshop, creating a space to put memories, experiences and imagination into words.

For people whose lives have often been reduced to circumstances, labels or the fact of being homeless, having the opportunity to tell your own story can be a powerful act of dignity. Writing gives us a way to remember, reflect, make sense of our experiences and, perhaps most importantly, to be heard.

We are grateful to Simon’s Town Library for welcoming the men of Happy Valley Home and creating a space where their stories can be shared.

Happy Valley Home is one of the oldest homeless shelters in the Southern Peninsula, established in 1996.

Happy Valley operates as a small, independent temporary shelter. In alignment with current guidelines and funding structures associated with the Department of Social Development (DSD), and after careful consideration of operational and safety requirements, we have made the difficult decision to transition to accommodating male clients only.

We are currently working closely with the women still in our care to assist them in securing appropriate alternative accommodation and support services. This includes referrals to female-specific shelters, assistance with independent accommodation opportunities, and, where possible, reintegration with family support structures.

Happy Valley remains committed to providing temporary shelter and support as a stepping stone toward recovery, stability, and reintegration away from homelessness. With homelessness continuing to rise and state funding remaining limited, we continue to rely heavily on public generosity, donations, and fundraising initiatives to help sustain our operations and meet the growing needs within the community.
