Happy Valley HOME

Happy Valley HOME A South Peninsula based homeless shelter, offering a stepping stone to life back in society.

We are a NPO registered Homeless Shelter, based in Simon's Town, Cape Town and founded in 1996. Happy Valley Home started in 1991 originally as a soup kitchen run from the Simon's Town Catholic Church. In 1996, it became clear that something more was needed to assist Simon's Town's poor, Mr. Duraan, previous Magistrate of Simon's Town , negotiated with the Navy to use the old arsenal buildings an

d Happy Valley Home was formerly established.]

Happy Valley Home caters for 65 residents on a 6 month basis. With 25 women & 40 men all over the age of 18, who reside in separated dorms. Each Resident is given 3 meals a day & also gets access to the clothing "store" room if they wish to get warmer clothing from donations given. Happy Valley strives to get the homeless off the streets & into a warm, safe environment. We also provide the opportunity for each resident to get their legal documents in order, like ID documents to obtain employment. Our staff also facilitate in connecting the residents with their families and back into society once again. Because Happy Valley is only allowed to house a maximum of 75 residents at one time, the winter Readiness Programme allows for an extra 10 homeless people to stay as non permanent residents from June to the end of August,

Unfortunately We often to refer homeless intakes to other shelters (with transport to said shelter)

For a small fee of R5, any homeless person is able to choose a FULL outfit for themselves from head to toe. We often feed those who are not residents as well, if we get enough food donations for that month. If we recieve any extra donations of food we will share and donate the excess to a variety of organisations locally who also depend of community donations. With increasing homelessness and limited State funds, Happy Valley relies on the generosity of others and fundraising to meet the demands of the ongoing running costs and homelessness issues,

We are always trying to find ways of improving our already good infrastructure, which is a struggle to maintain. Currently Happy Valley is in the process repair and renovations to some of the infrastructure and facilities. This will be done in phases as to not hinder the daily functioning of the shelter, & to pay attention to each phase specifically for its maximum potential & outcome.

67 Minutes & Beyond: Happy Valley Home in Action! 💛

🎒 Dignity Drive at Simons Town School
We delivered essential sanitary towel donations to support local learners, helping ensure that no student misses school due to a lack of basic hygiene supplies.

🍒Nourishing Our Community
We also distributed fresh fruit and vegetable donations to support patients cared for by Living Hope and the Masiphumelele Clinic. Fresh, healthy food is vital for recovery and wellness!

Together, we can make every day a Mandela Day! ✨

Thank you Law Hill Maritime

From one caring Simon's Town home to another....

Today Lawhill was fortunate to donate 64 used mattresses to the Happy Valley Home in Simon's Town.

This NGO assists homeless and vulnerable individuals to rebuild their lives. Among them are those sleeping rough on the streets in the wet and icy Cape Town winter.

The donation was made possible by the Lawhill Maritime Educational Trust and its supporters who have donated new, replacement mattresses to all Lawhill boarders.

The City of Cape Town is doing great work to assist homeless and displaced individuals find decent shelter this winter, and it was a privilege to be able to support their efforts in a small way.

Happy Valley has also acquired the steel beds we no longer need after AMSOL and the Sailors Home generously replaced them with beds that include a much-needed storage compartment for books.

Thanks to the team at Happy Valley Home... Nadima, Patrick and Denver for helping with the move today. And thanks to Councillor Simon Liel-Cock for putting us in touch .

We hope the mattresses provide comfort to those desperately in need of a warm nights sleep...

Happy Valley operates as a small, independent temporary shelter. In alignment with current guidelines and funding structures associated with the Department of Social Development (DSD), and after careful consideration of operational and safety requirements, we have made the difficult decision to transition to accommodating male clients only.

We are currently working closely with the women still in our care to assist them in securing appropriate alternative accommodation and support services. This includes referrals to female-specific shelters, assistance with independent accommodation opportunities, and, where possible, reintegration with family support structures.

Happy Valley remains committed to providing temporary shelter and support as a stepping stone toward recovery, stability, and reintegration away from homelessness. With homelessness continuing to rise and state funding remaining limited, we continue to rely heavily on public generosity, donations, and fundraising initiatives to help sustain our operations and meet the growing needs within the community.
