For the last 2 years GCU opened its doors to UCT Masters student Nande Gantsho to better understand the macro and micro challenges faced in the field of Asset Based Community Development as well as education in underprivileged communities.

Together with the tutors ,coaches and larger Heideveld Community we unpacked core issues, optimism is a choice in situations where there seems to be none.

GCU Goal50 Memorial Tournament Celebrating the Life of MacFernal.

It is a bittersweet day at Woodlands Primary in Heideveld on Saturday the 10th of January, as the community comes together to honor the memory of young MacFernal, a talented young footballer who tragically lost his life on the 18th of December. The GCU Memorial Tournament brings together kids from the community to celebrate MacFernal’s passion for football and his impact on those around him.

The tournament will be a vibrant display of football skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship, with kids aged 5-16 participating in a fun-filled day of matches and activities. The energy will be electric, with MacFernal’s family and friends that will be attending to make the day extra special and memorable.

"We're not just playing for MacFernal , we're playing for all the kids in our community who need to know they're seen, they're loved, and they're valued," by GCU and will always be welcome and feel safe.

The day includes a soccer tournament and jumping castles, ensuring every child will have a blast while remembering MacFernal infectious smile and love for the game. GCU will also be providing bread and food to the kids as well as to the community.

As we remembered MacFernal’s life, we were reminded of the power of community and the impact one person can have on so many lives. This tournament will be an annual event, celebrating his life and inspiring young athletes to chase their dreams.

Rest in peace, MacFernal . You may be gone, but your spirit lives on in our hearts and on the pitch.💔⚽️

South Africa ranks in the top 3 countries with youth unemployment in the world. Through our partnership with YearBeyond we have committed to ensure that our NGO support staff undertake learners licence classes for both personal and professional development post the program.

By bridging the skills gap between education and industry needs these programs and initiatives increase the chances of young people finding sustainable jobs.
