𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗾𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮

A dog was rescued by the NSRI Gqeberha crew on Saturday afternoon, 15 August 2026, after being swept hundreds of metres out to sea off Po***ck Beach in Gqeberha.

The NSRI duty crew was conducting routine training when it received reports at about 14h52 of a dog in distress offshore.

The rescue craft Rescue 6 Alpha was launched, while Coastal Water Rescue rescue swimmers responded from the shore.

Initial indications were that the dog had been swept at least 200 metres offshore. Lifeguards launched from Po***ck Beach to assist, while a bystander also paddled out on a Malibu rescue board.

When the NSRI rescue craft reached the scene, about half a kilometre offshore, an NSRI rescue swimmer entered the water, secured the dog and brought him safely aboard.

The dog appeared to be hypothermic and was wrapped in blankets while the rescue swimmer used body heat to help warm him. He was then taken to the NSRI Gqeberha rescue station, where warming procedures continued.

A contact number on the dog's collar enabled the rescue team to reach his owners, who later arrived at the station for an emotional reunion.

The dog, named Bean, is a male Australian Shepherd. He is believed to have broken free from his leash during an afternoon walk before entering the ocean.

As his owners and bystanders attempted to retrieve him, Bean was caught in a rip current and swept further out to sea.

Bean has since returned home, where he had a warm shower and is recovering in the care of his owners.

The NSRI commended the swift and coordinated response involving the rescue crews, lifeguards and members of the public.

South Africa is set to see a sharp drop in temperatures across most of the country early next week, with snow and rain in certain areas.

Heavy snowfall is expected in the Eastern Cape highlands, Lesotho, and the southern Free State, with snow also in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and southern Drakensburg.

How can you keep your animals safe and warm?

🏡Make sure animals have sufficient, warm shelter.
🐄Provide extra bedding to farm animals.
🐕Bring domestic pets like cats and dogs indoors.
💧Make sure animals have access to freshwater that is not iced over.
🐎For outdoors animals, give them waterproof shelter that is raised off the ground and dry bedding.
🐖Provide farm animals with dry feed and keep their shelters free from mud.
