From concept to screen: 20 African animators take their stories further

Africa has no shortage of rich, vibrant and unique stories. What’s often missing is the pathway that turns an original idea into a project ready to pitch, fund and produce.

The Independent Animators Capacity Building Programme took 20 African animators through that pathway. They worked through scriptwriting and character design, then animatics and pitch development, and opened conversations with potential funders and investors along the way.

Implemented by CAPACITI, a division of UVU Africa, in partnership with UNDP South Africa through timbuktoo, the programme is part of our work in the creative sector: connecting African creative talent to global markets, and helping original ideas become IP that can sustain a creative career.

The programme culminated in a showcase at the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town, home of the timbuktoo Creatives Hub, where the animators presented their projects to industry, funders and potential partners.

We see it most in the young innovators we work alongside, who bring their languages, stories and ways of seeing the world into what they create. Their heritage influences how they solve problems and build what comes next.

Here's to a country, and a continent, that's never been short on colour, creativity or ideas.Heritage is how we remember. Innovation is how we carry it forward.
