Breaking racial divisions through music!

For the first time in our program we are hosting a holiday program for children in a community that is predominantly known as a “colored” community”. This term simply says, only colored people( a formal term in South Africa) reside in this community. Cape Town remains is racially and economically divided because of the apartheid unjust laws that were passed to force segregation across South Africa.

One of the acts that were introduced to ensure this discrimination is the
Group Areas Act & Forced Removals: The notorious 1950 law mandated geographical separation by race. Coloured communities were largely relocated to designated areas on the Cape Flats (e.g., Mitchells Plain, Hanover Park), while Black Africans were restricted to planned townships like Gugulethu, Khayelitsha or relegated to informal settlements (black communities).

Imvula music program has collaborated with Angel Community Outreach to bring free music education to the children of Valhalla Park, a community notoriously labeled by gangsterism, poverty and substance abuse. This holiday program offered a safe space for the children of the community to access free music lessons and to express themselves in a safe space!

This week, we’re taking you inside the townships outside of Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦✨

Through the Playing For Change Foundation’s Imvula Music Program, music and the arts become instruments for hope, healing, and opportunity for local youth facing poverty, violence, drug abuse, and the lasting impacts of apartheid and racism.

But Imvula is about more than music 🎶
It’s about mentorship, community, safe spaces, nourishment, and giving young people the chance to dream bigger.❤️

“Music is my therapy. It heals wounds that medicine can’t touch.”

-Polar, Imvula music student

A huge thank you to the Nina Simone Charitable Trust for helping make this impactful work possible. ❤️🎶
