🌊 100 years old today, Sir David Attenborough!

You’ve dedicated a lifetime to helping us see what we’d rather look away from — and what becomes possible when we don’t. You’ve turned wonder into responsibility. Given the ocean a voice, and ignited ours.

Happy Birthday to an extraordinary centenarian. Thank you for your service to nature and humanity, Sir. 🐟

World Book Day | 23 April
Books have the power to take us to the ends of the Earth — quite literally.
At the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA), we celebrate the role of books in sharing the stories, science, and human experiences of Antarctica, Marion Island, Gough Island and the Southern Ocean. From research to art, these publications connect people to places few will ever visit, but many can learn from.
A special highlight this year is former Marion Island overwintering team member DR Mariëtte Wheeler Western Cape Education Department: Therapeutic Services , who recently inspired young learners through a school book reading. By sharing her personal experiences, she helped raise awareness about climate change, Antarctic research, and the Mouse-Free Marion Project — showing how storytelling can spark curiosity and care for our planet.
ALSA continues to build a growing collection of publications — from scientific works to personal narratives and creative projects — preserving over 70 years of South Africa’s Antarctic legacy.
This World Book Day, we celebrate the stories that connect us, inspire us, and remind us of the importance of protecting our planet.
