Saartjie Baartman Centre

Saartjie Baartman Centre Safe accommodation for abused women & their children; counselling, legal & economic empowerment.

10/06/2026

Our Director, Bernadine Bachar, speaks on the financial reality of keeping women and children safe.

Every year, the Saartjie Baartman Centre faces a minimum funding deficit of R6 million — approximately R500 000 every month that must be raised to continue providing essential services to survivors of gender-based violence.

Behind every number is a woman seeking safety. A child searching for stability. A family taking the first step towards healing.

This is why our Sponsor Her Safety campaign exists — because safety should never depend on financial circumstances.

Together, we can ensure that women and children continue to receive the care, protection, and support they deserve.

Safety is often something we take for granted.

For many women and children fleeing violence, safety becomes something they have to leave everything behind to find.

At the Saartjie Baartman Centre, we witness the courage it takes to start over. We also see the support required to make that journey possible.

Our Sponsor Her Safety campaign is an invitation to be part of that journey.

Together, we can help ensure that women and children have access to safety, support, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

Help us help her.

Safety has a clear cost — and a powerful impact.

It costs R5 300 per month to fully support one family through the Sponsor Her Safety Campaign at the Saartjie Baartman Centre. That contribution covers safe accommodation, essential care, and the support systems that help a family stabilise after violence.

One monthly sponsorship doesn’t just fund services — it restores safety, dignity, and the chance to rebuild.

When we say “sponsoring a family’s stay,” we’re not only talking about a bed for the night.

We’re talking about immediate safety from violence, a secure place to breathe, access to counselling and support services, and the basics needed to start again with dignity. It is protection in its most practical form — food, shelter, care, and a structured path out of crisis.

This is what it looks like to stand with a family when they have nowhere else to go.

Children are often the unseen victims of gender-based violence.

Exposure to abuse doesn’t just affect the present — it shapes a child’s emotional, psychological, and developmental well-being long after the moment has passed.

This Child Protection Week, we are reminded that ending violence against women is also about protecting children. Their safety, their healing, and their futures depend on it.

At the Saartjie Baartman Centre, we stand in solidarity during Child Protection Week (29 May – 5 June 2026), committed to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and safety of every child 💚

This year’s theme, “Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children,” reminds us that protecting children is a shared responsibility. Every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment free from abuse, neglect, and harm.

Let us continue to speak up, report abuse, support families in crisis, and build communities where children are protected and valued.

💚 Together, we can end violence against children.

Our Director, Bernadine Bachar, on how the economic crisis is impacting the Saartjie Baartman Centre.

As costs increase, the need for support doesn’t slow down — it grows.

This is why consistent support matters.
This is why campaigns like Sponsor Her Safety exist.

Because safety should never be affected by the economy.

Help us help her.

Gender-based violence is not rare.
It is happening every day — in homes, in communities, and often behind closed doors.

Across South Africa, women are facing violence at alarming rates.
Many arrive at our shelter with nothing but their children and the hope of being safe.

Behind every statistic is a life interrupted.
A woman trying to survive.
A child trying to understand.

This is why safe shelter matters.
This is why support matters.

Help us help her.

We’re not just talking about change—we’re budgeting for it. 💛

Our financial manager lays it out clearly: this campaign needs funding to keep showing up, supporting, and standing with women who deserve more than just promises.

If you believe in impact that’s real, visible, and accountable—this is your moment to get involved.
