The Genesis Community Arts Project, based in Parkwood, Cape Town, directed by Ingrid Solomon, Christopher Siljeur and Joey Jacobs needs your help! The vision is a powerful one. This project has been established with a mission to invest in the spirit of the next generation, and to bring about a permanent change within the community. We will use the arts as a tool to skill, nourish and enrich the yo
ung people that are currently given little or no alternative to gangsterism, drugs, alcohol abuse and violence. Within the nurturing borders of this project, children will be able to work and play in a safe, creative and positive environment. We will reach children as young as eight years old, helping them discover and grow their talents before more negative influences can overpower them and take control of their lives. Children will be taught in Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts (ie. Painting, Textiles etc.), with specialist teaching in each of these areas. We will start with music as those of us leading the project are musicians. Music has the power to heal, to unite, to educate, to reconcile, to entertain, to energise, and to bring joy. Gangsta Rap, and suchlike, is associated with crime, but other kinds of positive music, that without this project the young people might never be exposed to, are antidotes. With the help of funding from people who believe in this project and what we are trying to do, here are a few things we envision for the future:
A large community children's orchestra of 200+ learners
Teaching young people to play instruments
Teaching young people to read music
Giving young people the chance to take formal examinations
The outcomes of this project will be the enhancement of personal qualities eg. Building confidence, leadership skills etc. concentration, discipline, patience, depth of understanding, compassion. Learners will establish bands and have the opportunity to possibly join international ensembles
They can also takes their artistic skills on to university. The current prescribed programme in schools undervalues Arts subjects, and shows a worrying lack of understanding for how the arts can and do positively and powerfully impact upon people in their social, intellectual and spiritual contexts.
