RCYC Sailing Academy RCYC Sailing Academy seeks to expose, upskill, empower and grow youth through sailing.

Formed around 20 years ago, RCYC Sailing Academy nowadays trains roundabout 100 youngsters from all walks of life, enabling Cape Town’s youngsters to learn skills related to sailing and the boating industry with the long-term goal being to introduce them to the participation in the oceans’ economy. Several Academy students have been employed by the local maritime industry.

Meet Philasande Gwala, rising star of the Alexforbes Angel Wings crew!

Philasande discovered her love for sailing at Cape Peninsula University of Technology and has competed in races like the GIMCO, Spring Regatta and West Coast Races.

A skilled trimmer with a Day Skipper licence, she’s pursuing her Offshore qualification while balancing her career as an Admin Assistant.

Competing in Cape2Rio 2025 is a milestone and she’s ready to cross the finish line in Brazil. Philasande encourages young women in sailing: “You can be the rose amongst the thorns.”
