My name is Maria, I am German and I lost my
heart to South Africa during my studies in 2010. I have been
living in Cape Town now for more than 10 years. I started the ubuntu.beanies project in the midst of the
Covid-19 pandemic in April 2020 with the aim to learn a new
skill - knitting - and to keep me sane during a time where
absolutely nothing was allowed in South Africa. I added
ubuntu.wildlife

as a sub-category in late 2022 after I taught
myself how to crochet. The aim of these projects has always been to create
something small that can help to raise continious donations
for communities in need. Please keep in mind that your piece is by no means a perfect
piece - you might find one or two "knitting or crochet hickups",
which I believe just add to the character of your
individual handmade piece. Remember, it's made with a whole lot of love and of course,
a purpose.

Big Changes Ahead

Dear Friends,

When I launched this account, it was a small dream of mine to share my crocheted creations with you all. It’s been a labor of love, and building this community of nearly 400 organic followers has meant so much to me.

However, managing two accounts while balancing a full-time management job has become unsustainable. Social media is hard, and consistency is key - but it’s something I’ve struggled to maintain.

To truly focus on the heart of what I do, I’ve decided to consolidate this account into my main page: Ubuntu Beanies (.beanies ). Moving forward, that account will feature a blend of all my handmade creations, both knitted and 🧶 .

This change allows me to give you more authentic content without the stress of splitting my energy.

Over the years, I’ve crocheted and knitted over 800 items, raising nearly R130,000 for via .

Managing two accounts has felt like having split personalities, and it’s time to merge them into one cohesive space.

Thank you for your love, understanding, and support throughout this journey. Please join me at .beanies for all things knitted and crocheted!

Onwards and upwards, Maria

Somehow, .ohne.erna ’s Ellas always look so sleek and agile, while mine tend to rock a little pot belly vibe 😅 What’s her secret?!

This is Uschi, the tiny little sister of the legend, Ursula the Unicorn 🦄

She is small but full of charm - and definitely has her own sprinkle of magic ✨

I feel like she would be perfect for adding a bit of sparkle to your day, whether she is hanging out on your desk or keeping you company on adventures.

Who wouldn’t love a tiny unicorn sidekick?

I have been busy 🙊 I got my hands on this yarn called Carnival from and I can not stop crocheting with it 🙈

Look at these colours!! Guess I will continue to produce rainbow Wilma’s and rainbow Jam’s until I am back in Cape Town to avoid the gloomy dark winter weather outside on this side of the world 🌍

Meet Wilma 🐳 — one of the original five that made waves in the Ubuntu wildlife world! After a year of focusing on the big critters, it feels like coming home to crochet her again. Sometimes, the littlest ones leave the biggest mark ✨

Wondering about the secret to success? 💪 Start with a sprinkle of self-belief, add a dash of ambition, and keep Peppa the Penguin and a positive potato by your side! 🐧🥔

These two may be soft and squishy, but they are fierce cheerleaders for all your goals.

You’ve got this, girl! Keep reaching, keep dreaming! 🌟

These neon ocean colors are my absolute favorites!

Not that this is a competition, but if it was one and we would want to figure out who has the coolest yarn shades, and while Cape Town and Berlin both impress as destinations, Berlin’s colors might just take the crown. Don’t you think?

🌈✨
