It is a youth-based debate club for everyone from surrounding local communities, aiming to empower the south African youth to take make sure that their voice is being heard through the debate.

The Public Squares is a research development programme designed to advance transdisciplinary work at Stellenbosch University (SU). This initiative involves selected teams in a tailored development process to enhance their skills in collaborative research, public engagement, teamwork, and grant writing.

On the 4th of August, the Ekasi Debate Club attended the Stakeholder Mapping & Engagement in Transdisciplinary Research lecture and workshop hosted by Stellenbosch University and PUBLIC SQUARES. The event was held in-person at Room 3037 of the Biomedical Research Institute, Tygerberg Campus.

The workshop focused on how researchers and community stakeholders can work together to identify, map, and meaningfully engage the people affected by research. We learned practical tools for building collaboration, improving communication, and ensuring that research actually serves the communities it aims to impact.

It was a powerful morning of learning and collaboration. As a debate club, we value spaces that teach us how to listen, engage different voices, and build solutions together. Thank you to Stellenbosch University and PUBLIC SQUARES for the invitation and for hosting such an insightful session.

Today learners from Garlandale High School and Voortrekker High School debated the motion: THBT one party systems would be more beneficial for African countries.

Learners engaged with the motion by looking at issues of stability, governance and development across the continent.

Proposition argued that a one-party system brings policy continuity, national unity and allows government to focus resources on service delivery instead of elections.
Opposition argued that one party systems lead to abuse of power, lack of accountability and remove the space for people to voice their thoughts.

On 27 July 2026, we had a privilege of hosting learners from New Eisleben High School for a debate training session. It was inspiring to see new faces bring new so much energy, curiosity and commitment to the room as they have stepped into the world of competitive debate.

The training comes as they were preparing to res their school at the Western Cape Board Championships.The focus was on building arguments, thinking critically under pressure, and finding confidence in their voices. You could already see them growing with every round and every piece of feedback.

We are proud to support the next generation of debators from New Eisleben High School. The dedication they showed on the 27th tells us the future of debate in the Western Cape is in good hands.

We celebrate 18 July in remembrance of our hero and icon, Tata Madiba, for the work he did during apartheid and the values he lived by: dignity, equality, and service to others.

Spending 60 minutes in service is worth it. It’s a chance to make an impact, to learn, and to grow - not just as professionals, but as people.

As we conclude Youth Month members of Ekasi Debate Club participated in a youth engagement session held at Republic of South Africa Parliament on the 8 June 2026.

The event was convened in remembrance of the Youth of 1976 Soweto Uprising and provided a platform for a dialogue on key issues impacting young South Africans today.

Our engagements focused on two critical pillars: Quality Education and Equal protection under the law. We are committed to ensuring that the legacy of 1976 continues to inform youth participation in democratic spaces.

Alumni: Kamva Shenxane

Kamva Shenxane is an ambitious and dedicated alumni of the New Eisleben Debate Team.

Debate Journey
Kamva joined the debate team in Grade 8. His motivation was to build confidence, expand his English vocabulary, and develop effective communication skills.

Impact & Growth:
Through active participation, he gained exposure to diverse perspectives and new knowledge. Debate directly contributed to improved academic performance in essay writing and oral presentations.

Kamva’s Reflection on Debate:
"Debate is very important. It is not about winning and losing, but about understanding, learning new things, and hearing different opinions from different perspectives. Most of all, know that your voice matters."

On June 16th 2026, we attended the MOT South Africa Voices of Courage Event, where we engaged with one of the panelists, Mr Shakoor Lucas, about the inspiration behind establishing the Shakoor Lucas Foundation during his early high school years. Shakoor Lucas is indeed a man of his word, representing the youth. His words were: "Get Rich in Mind or you will stay behind, we have to place our youth at the centre of every conversation and then change will happen."
