S**t provides grants to small rural community-based organisations to cover their core costs, together with specific grants for capacity building and HIV and AIDS. S**t believes that rural community-based organisations need mentoring and support more intensively while they are in the early phases of their organisational development and in times of crisis. S**t provides this support and capacity building through dedicated fieldwork.

This month we welcomed Mokgadi Madikoto as Programme Officer to the . Mokgadi will support partner organisations across Limpopo and Mpumalanga. She has just completed her first month at S**T and observed how engaged and knowledgeable everyone she encountered was. The deep wisdom and capacity that already exist within the community-based organisations was palpable. Witnessing the living conditions of mining communities and their resilience, made her first impactful.

She has over a decade of experience in the development sector working across Limpopo and Gauteng provinces. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and is currently pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation. She is enthusiastic about using evidence and learning to strengthen programmes and improve outcomes for communities.

Mokgadi looks forward to meeting all the in her portfolio over the next few weeks and assisting with the first learning festival with Limpopo and Mpumalanga CBOs in September. Please join us in welcoming her to the team.

In Ngqeleni, AUCAC operates as the coordinating body for a Skills Development Programme, which is run in partnership with the National Co-operative Association of South Africa (NCASA) and FASSET (Finance, accounting, management consulting and other financial services). The organization is tasked with overseeing program logistics, securing and managing the training venue, handling learner administration and compliance, and providing continuous operational support throughout the programme. Through collaboration between learners, project partners, and the training provider, AUCAC helps ensure the successful rollout of accredited pathways for within the Nyandeni Local Municipality.

Meet RACR’s new Youth Ambassadors for Climate Change!

We are proud to introduce the new Youth Ambassadors for Climate Change (YACC) cohort, together with their coordinator, Indiphile Matini.

These young leaders will work alongside community-based organisations to organise climate change discussions, workshops and activities in their communities. Through the programme, they will help young people understand how climate change affects their daily lives and support practical, locally led responses to challenges such as water scarcity, food insecurity and environmental degradation.

Indiphile will guide and support the cohort through training, mentorship and regular reflection as they develop their skills and put their ideas into action.

We look forward to following their journeys and seeing the change they inspire in their communities.

Siyanakekela Community Development hosted a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) awareness workshop at Kotsoana Village in July as part of its ongoing commitment to promote human rights, community safety, and access to justice. Thirty-one people, a mix of men, women and youth attended the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to address and prevent violence within families and communities. Because of the sensitive nature of the topic there was initial hesitation, but the facilitators created a respectful and confidential environment that allowed participants to become more comfortable so they could contribute to the discussions.

The Interchurch Local Development Agency (ILDA) picked up the baton for 256 families dealing with failed projects in the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality in November 2025 when they did a social audit in two communities. A stalled housing rectification project in the Greenfields community is one of these failed local government projects which affected a number of households. In 2016 the NMB Municipality declared several houses to be unsound and unsafe. It demolished these unsafe houses, but work stopped without any official explanation provided to the affected parties. Repeated attempts by the affected households to get updates or answers from the municipality only yielded frustration. When ILDA onboarded the cases late last year, they started engaging with local government to find answers to these questions. Meetings requested for early in the year only happened in April. Formal feedback from the NMB Municipality received in June, required a community meeting so ILDA could formulate a collective response. Further follow-up questions were asked of the municipality. In June, ILDA also escalated the issue to the province. We continue to track what happens with this issue.

Real change begins when communities have the knowledge, confidence and tools to take action.

At the 2026 RACR Learning Festival, participants from rural communities across South Africa explored climate justice, advocacy and practical solutions to the challenges they face every day.

From learning how communities successfully challenged environmental threats on the Wild Coast, to creating their own advocacy campaigns and discovering sustainable composting solutions, the festival equipped participants to become stronger climate champions in their own communities.

Climate resilience is built through learning, collaboration and action. Together, we can protect our environment and create healthier, more resilient communities.
