✏️ Artist Spotlight: Marili Prinsloo ✍️🖊

Marili has a beautiful story because it's not just about art—it's about motherhood, resilience, and building a life through creativity. That feels like the emotional heart of her feature.

For Marili Prinsloo, art has never been just a hobby—it has always been part of who she is.

From a young age, she was constantly creating, crafting, and drawing. One of her earliest memories takes her back to Grade 1, where a teacher taught her to colour using small circular motions rather than lines. That lesson not only helped her win a colouring competition that year, but it became a technique she still uses in her coloured pencil work today.

Although she studied art and design throughout her school years, Marili considers herself largely self-taught. At the age of 21, she picked up a pencil with a simple goal: to draw a portrait of her daughter.

That portrait changed everything.

What began as an act of love became the foundation of an artistic journey that continues to grow today.

Portraiture remains Marili's first love. Whether drawing people, pets, or wildlife, she is captivated by the stories hidden within a face—the emotions, memories, and connections that can be brought to life from nothing more than a blank sheet of paper and a handful of pencils.

Working primarily in graphite and coloured pencil, she is known for her realistic style and remarkable attention to detail. While she enjoys both colour and grayscale work, black-and-white portraits will always hold a special place in her heart.

For Marili, every artwork tells a story.

Many of the commissions she creates honour loved ones, treasured pets, and meaningful memories. Others are inspired by her own experiences and emotions. Whatever the subject, her goal remains the same: to create work that connects with people and inspires them.

Perhaps the greatest influence on her journey has been her daughters.

At a pivotal moment in her life, Marili realised she needed to create a better future for her family. Art became the answer. Through her work, she has been able to provide for her daughters while remaining a hands-on mother—something she considers one of life's greatest blessings.

Beyond the studio, Marili finds peace in gardening, reading, and spending time in nature. She is also passionate about living compassionately, using only cruelty-free art supplies in keeping with her vegan lifestyle.

Her career continues to gain momentum, with recent exhibitions through Kunye Art Foundation and exciting opportunities ahead, including exhibitions at Decorex and Spring in Art Colour Festival, as well as ambassador work with STAEDTLER during the company's 75th anniversary celebrations.

If her art could speak, it would carry a simple but powerful message:

"You don't need a degree to create art. You just need to feel it."

Marili Prinsloo is part of the Kunye collective—bringing heart, compassion, and extraordinary realism to every piece she creates.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Ingrid Wallach 👩‍🎨

For Ingrid Wallach, creativity has never been something she chose — it has always been part of who she is.

As a child, she drew on every surface she could find, including the walls. Recognising her passion early on, her father took her out painting with an easel when she was just six years old. That simple act sparked a lifelong love affair with art.

Over the years, Ingrid studied art through school and continued developing her skills through exploration, experimentation, and a willingness to push boundaries. Rather than confining herself to a single style, she prefers to follow curiosity wherever it leads.

Acrylics remain her favourite medium, although she has also explored mixed media and resin. No matter how far she ventures creatively, she always finds her way back to acrylic paint when she wants to create something meaningful and lasting.

Animals have long been one of her favourite subjects. She is fascinated by expression, particularly the emotion and character found in an animal's eyes. Whether painting wildlife, birds, or scenes inspired by nature, she strives to create work that captures a moment of connection.

Today, living in Betty's Bay, inspiration is everywhere. The sea, the birds, the baboons, and the ever-changing landscape constantly find their way into her work. Sometimes inspiration arrives through observation, and sometimes through dreams that simply refuse to be ignored.

Like many artists, Ingrid knows the creative journey isn't always easy. She loves the excitement of preparing a new canvas and beginning a fresh piece, but openly admits that self-doubt often arrives somewhere along the way. Yet she continues to push through those moments, trusting the process and believing that growth happens on the other side of uncertainty.

Beyond her own artistic practice, Ingrid made a remarkable decision. While she was set to become president of the South African Society of Artists, she chose instead to focus her energy on growing the Kunye Art Foundation — creating opportunities and exposure for artists across South Africa.

Her own artistic milestones include exhibiting with the South African Society of Artists at Kirstenbosch, a moment she still remembers with excitement, as well as seeing her Botanical Animals collection find a home with collectors in France.

If her art could speak, it would tell the story of someone who has lived fully, faced challenges, remained optimistic, and continued to see beauty in the world.

And if she could speak to her younger self, her message would be simple:

"Don't stop painting because people don't believe in you. Believe in yourself and you can only get better."

Ingrid Wallach is the founder of Kunye Art Foundation and an artist whose creativity, generosity, and vision continue to inspire the community she has built.

🎨 Artist Spotlight: Duane Venter ✏️

For Duane Venter, art has always been there.

Born in Benoni, South Africa, Duane has been drawing for as long as he can remember. Like many artists, life took him in different directions, and for a time drawing became less central to his daily routine. But around the age of 30, he picked up a pencil again—and never looked back.

Entirely self-taught, Duane has dedicated himself to mastering realism, constantly refining his technique and pushing his skills further with every piece he creates.

Wildlife is at the heart of his work.

From the intense gaze of a leopard to the unique character of other African wildlife, Duane is drawn to capturing the life, presence, and personality of each animal. His goal is not simply to create a likeness, but to create a portrait that feels alive.

While pencil remains where his artistic journey began, his creative practice has expanded to include charcoal, soft pastels, and oil paint. Each medium offers new opportunities to explore texture, depth, and detail while maintaining the realism that has become his signature.

Leopards remain a recurring theme throughout his portfolio—animals that embody both power and elegance, qualities that are reflected in the precision of his work.

Today, Duane's artwork is collected by wildlife and art enthusiasts both locally and internationally, with his pieces finding homes around the world.

His approach is simple: keep learning, keep improving, and strive to perfect every portrait.

Duane Venter is part of the Kunye collective—bringing patience, skill, and a deep appreciation for wildlife into every piece he creates.

🎨Artist Spotlight: Jean Hazlitt ✨️👩‍🎨

For Jean Hazlitt, art began with curiosity — and grew into a world where rules simply don’t exist.

Creative by nature, Jean spent years exploring different forms of expression, but around 30 years ago she discovered something that sparked joy: painting with heritage stained glass paints. It was the first time she sold artwork, and the beginning of a journey she never saw coming.

Years later, while painting tiny rocks and hiding them around Cape Town as part of a community project, her art took another unexpected turn. On one birthday, her husband gifted her a few canvases and asked a simple question:

"What would happen if you went bigger?"

That question changed everything.

Today Jean creates vibrant acrylic pouring artworks — some reaching an impressive 1.5m commission scale. Self-taught and endlessly experimental, she developed her style through YouTube, curiosity, and fearless play.

Her process is unlike traditional painting. Brushes often take a back seat while liquid paint, movement, gravity, and even a well paint-covered hairdryer become her tools of choice.

And where does all this happen?

In a once-humble shed that transformed into a colourful studio — with paint splattered on the floors, walls, and occasionally even her dog at her feet.

Jean describes her art simply:

"Playing with liquid paint and using anything but a paintbrush to create magic with colour and movement."

And perhaps that says everything.

For Jean, art has always been her “no rules zone” — a place to let go, breathe, and play. During years in the corporate world, creativity became her escape. Now, it has become both a passion and a reward between her many projects.

Beyond art, Jean has another unexpected side: she holds a PhD in Leadership Development and speaks internationally, often using her own artwork in presentations.

She’s also represented South Africa in Masters Hockey — with some of her art sales helping fund her World Cup journey.

And her artwork? It has travelled too.

Four commissioned African sunset pieces journeyed through Africa, the UK, and ultimately to the USA, where they now hang in the home of a former Survivor reality TV participant.

If her art could speak, it would say:

"Disrupt your thinking and remember to play and have fun."

Jean Hazlitt is part of the Kunye collective — bringing movement, colour, and fearless creativity into every piece she creates.
