Nature does not work in isolation. Every connection matters.

Across the heavily transformed landscape of the Cape Flats, Ingcungcu Sunbird Restoration isn't just making spaces green. They are helping restore critical ecological function.

By transforming school grounds into indigenous fynbos corridors, these gardens become vital stepping stones for birds, bees and butterflies to move, feed and thrive.

"What would you like to learn?"
This is how Ingcungcu shaped the Eco-Club curriculum for the first half of the year. Built on the curiosity of these brilliant young minds, community-led, and from the bottom up they turned their school gardens into living labs.

They wanted to know the names of the plants growing around them, how they lived, what they were traditionally used for, and the relationships they shared with birds, insects and people.

A journey back to freedom for rescued pangolins 🐾🤎

In 2019, Louis and Luna were the first two rehabilitated pangolins released into Northern Zululand, where the species had been locally extinct for decades. The reintroduction officially began at Phinda Private Game Reserve, one of the reserves continuing this important work today.

Then came Bhuti, a survivor rescued from a poacher's car in 2020 who went on to raise two wild-born pups. By October 2022, Bhuti's first pup, Bongi, had her own baby (Pictured here).

This second-generation birth showed that a breeding population was becoming established in the wild.

Our role at The Okoa Fund is simple: to support this success. By funding camera traps, we can help teams on the ground at both Phinda and Manyoni monitor these elusive animals from a safe distance, gathering vital data without disrupting their wild lives.

It’s a small piece of equipment, but it backs a model that brings hope to pangolins globally. 🐾

For nearly 70 years, the Temminck's ground pangolin was considered locally extinct in the Zululand region of KwaZulu-Natal, which includes Manyoni.

In 2019, the African Pangolin Working Group came together with partners to bring them back.
Every pangolin released into the Manyoni reserve was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, rehabilitated and carefully returned to the wild.

Today, pangolins are roaming free in Manyoni Private Game Reserve again 🐾 and this is where the 6 specialist camera traps we funded are heading. To serve as vital tools on the ground, helping the field teams monitor pangolins as they reclaim their home.

Keep following as we’ll be sharing the next chapter of this incredible history, including the stories of the very first wild-born pups.

We ran so they can roam 🐾

Sasha, Tamsyn, and Marwaan from Ker & Downey® Africa , thank you. In smiles, sweat, and tears, you showed us what conservation in action looks like. You trained hard, ran the 23.5 km Pangolin Route at the Sabi Sand and raised over R30,000 in donations.

Because The Okoa Fund matched those community donations, together we brought the campaign total to R62,925.

Thank you to the African Pangolin Working Group for the vital work you do. We are proud to play a small part by funding 6 specialist camera traps to monitor rescued pangolins on their journeys back to the wild.

To everyone who followed along, sent encouragement, shared our message, and donated 🐾🤎 thank you.

This isn't the end of the story. We will keep you updated as the camera traps are put to work in the field.

You don't just release a pangolin and hope for the best.

Their return to the wild takes months of careful tracking, monitoring and care. With the goal of eventually stepping back and giving them the space to live wild lives.

That's where specialist camera traps can make a difference. They help conservationists keep watch from a distance, while pangolins return to their quiet, elusive lives.

Our Every Step Counts campaign has funded the first six camera traps, but we can still go further. Every additional donation can help fund more cameras and support pangolins after release.
